NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame hockey team used an impressive penalty kill and some timely scoring to come back and tie fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth, 3-3, at the Compton Family Ice Arena (3,751) on Friday night.

Trailing 2-0 and trying to kill off a five-minute Minnesota Duluth power play midway through the second period, Steven Fogarty dropped a pass off for Justin Wade, who fired a shot past goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo for his first career shorthanded goal to get Notre Dame on the board.

Bobby Nardella followed up with his first career goal at 13:54 of the second to tie the score at 2-2.

"It was a gutsy effort by our guys to come back," Notre Dame Head Coach Jeff Jackson said. "Especially after that five-minute major penalty kill and being shorthanded by two men on a couple of different instances. I give our guys a lot of credit for that."

Minnesota Duluth took back the lead at 5:27 of the third period on an Austyn Young goal, but Sam Herr answered again for the Irish with a power-play tally at 7:32 for what proved to be the final goal of the game.

"That (Herr goal) was the kind of response we needed, it is growth - being able to handle adverse situations and respond," Jackson said. "That's a good sign for our team to come back from two goals down against a very good hockey team."

Notre Dame's penalty kill finished the night 7-for-7, while the Irish power play was 1-for-7.

"Our penalty kill started with Petersen in goal," Jackson added. "Then we had our young defensemen coming through with the help of Justin Wade, who was a man out there and was a big reason we were able to kill those off."

In net, Cal Petersen made 39 saves, while Kaskisuo totaled 26 saves.

The Irish are now 1-1-1 on the season, while Minnesota Duluth is 2-1-1.

Notre Dame and Minnesota Duluth will close out their weekend series on Saturday night (Oct. 24). Puck drop is slated for 6:40 p.m., and the game will be televised by NBC Sports Network.

Goals

-- Minnesota Duluth took a 1-0 lead at 6:27 of the first period when the Bulldogs intercepted a Notre Dame breakout attempt and worked the puck back down low. Austin Farley finished off the sequence with his second goal of the season, which he scored from the slot. Tony Cameranesi and Karson Kuhlman assisted on the goal.

-- The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead at 10:09 of the first period when Alex Iafallo scored on a three-on-two rush with a shot high past Petersen for his first goal of the season. The assists went to Willie Corrin and Adam Johnson.

--Notre Dame made it 2-1 at 9:39 of the second period when Justin Wade snapped a shot high past Kaskisuo for his first goal of the season and his first career shorthanded goal. Steven Fogarty created the chance after he intercepted a pass at the defensive blue line, skated into the offensive zone and laid the puck back to Wade.

--The Irish tied the game, 2-2, at 13:54 of the second period on a goal from freshman Bobby Nardella. Nardella fired a shot towards the goal from the far corner as Mario Lucia crashed the net. The shot from Nardella deflected off a Bulldog defenseman and into the net for his first career goal.

-- Minnesota Duluth took a 3-2 lead at 5:27 of the third period when Jared Thomas won a faceoff back to Kyle Osterberg. Osterberg fired a shot towards the goal that was blocked in front, but Austyn Young put the loose puck in for his second goal of the year.

-- Sam Herr tied the game at 3-3 with a power-play goal at 7:32 of the third period. Herr one-timed a Fogarty feed low to the far post for his first goal of the season. Jordan Gross also assisted on the play as his pass from the point connected with Fogarty down low.

-- All-time: the Irish are now 26-20-2 in home openers, including 1-2-1 in openers at the Compton Family Ice Arena (though the Compton Family Ice Arena opened for the 2011-12 season, Notre Dame played its first home series that season in the Joyce Center).
