NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Senior captain Steven Fogarty scored an extra attacker goal with 1:30 left in the third period to pull No. 10 Notre Dame to within one goal of #9 Boston University, but the Terriers were able to hold on for a 3-2 win on Friday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena (5,022).
"I knew our guys were ready," Head Coach Jeff Jackson said after the game. "They know the importance of these games right now and I thought we were better as the games progressed, but they (Boston University) played a good second period, and shut it down tight in the third."
Just after Jake Evans nearly scored on a shorthanded tip in front following a Sam Herr pass, Ahti Oksanen scored a power-play goal with a one-timer from the top of the faceoff circle that put the Terriers up 1-0 with five minutes to play in the first.
Notre Dame answered when Connor Hurley tied the game at 1-1 with just six seconds remaining in the first period. He took a feed from Bobby Nardella and beat Maguire low for his second power-play goal of the season.
Mike Moran gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead early in the second period.
After that, Notre Dame started to generate more offensive chances, outshooting Boston University 16-8 in the middle frame. One of the best chances in the period came as Andrew Oglevie was open in the slot, but his shot went just wide of Maguire's net.
"We're playing well, but they're scoring the goals," Jackson said. "We're not getting those grade-A chances, and when we do, we're not finishing."
Charlie McAvoy made it a 3-1 game midway through the third period and then the Irish offense went back on the attack but each time Maguire was tested, he proved equal to the task.
Then with Cal Petersen pulled from the Notre Dame net in favor of the extra attacker, Fogarty cut the Terrier lead to one with 1:32 left in the period when he jammed in a rebound in front.
The Irish had a few more chances over the final 90 seconds but could not tie the game.
"Right now, it's on us seniors to make sure that we are executing and we need to make sure everyone knows the importance of that," Sam Herr said. "We definitely have more room to work with our on our execution ... what matters is getting points tomorrow night and getting back into the win column."
Petersen finished with 21 saves in the Notre Dame net, while Maguire totaled 33 for the Terriers.
Boston University was 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Irish finished 1-for-3.
Elsewhere in Hockey East, Boston College defeated UMass Lowell to ensure that Notre Dame will finish in the top four of the league standings, meaning the Irish will receive a first round bye before playing host to a quarterfinal series (March 11-13).
"I don't want to back into anything," Jackson added. "Our team's better than that. We've run into two really good hockey teams to finish the year here, and we have to find a way to beat a good hockey team ... we have to be willing to win a game 2-1, and that means we'll have to be even better without the puck because it's hard to score goals this time of the year."
The Irish will close out the regular season with a 7:10 p.m. home game tomorrow night (Feb. 27) against the Terriers, which will also be broadcast by the NBC Sports Network.
Prior to tomorrow night's game, Notre Dame seniors Nick Stasack, Andy Ryan, Sam Herr, Thomas DiPauli, Mario Lucia and Steven Fogarty will be honored as part of Senior Night at the Compton Family Ice Arena, with the program is slated to begin 20 minutes prior to the game.
Goals
-- Boston University took a 1-0 lead at 15:24 of the first period when Ahti Oksanen one-timed a Danny O'Regan pass past Petersen from the middle of the faceoff circle (power-play goal).
-- Notre Dame got on the board at 19:54 of the first period when Connor Hurley tied the game at 1-1 with his sixth goal of the season, which was also scored on the power play. Jordan Gross faked a shot at the point and then slid the puck to Bobby Nardella as the freshman moved toward the Terriers' goal. Nardella took an extra look and sent the puck across the slot to Hurley, whose shot beat Maguire low for his second power-play goal of the season.
-- The Terriers took a 2-1 lead at 2:58 of the second when Mike Moran knocked in a rebound following shots in front by Chase Phelps and Tommy Kelley, who earned assists on the play.
-- Charlie McAvoy gave Boston University a 3-1 lead at 9:07 of the third period when he let a one-timer fly from the point off of a Jordan Greenway pass from down low.
-- Steven Fogarty scored an extra attacker goal at 18:28 of the third period to pull the Irish to within one at 3-2. Jordan Gross fired a shot from the point that ricocheted off of Dylan Malmquist's skate, forcing Maguire into a tricky save. With the rebound falling in front, Sam Herr and Fogarty went for the loose puck and it was Fogarty who was able to force it over the goal line for his 10th goal of the season.

-- Cal Petersen made his 33rd-consecutive start in the Notre Dame goal this season and his 46th in a row dating back to the 2014-15 season.
-- Earlier on Friday, Petersen was selected as one of the 26 nominees for the 2016 Mike Richter Award, which honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men's hockey.
-- Steven Fogarty scored his 10th goal of the season, a single-season career-high total for the senior.
