ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team hosted second-ranked Union on Friday night and fell to the Dutchmen. Union took a 1-0 lead into the third period, but an insurance goal midway through the frame and an empty-net goal made it a 3-0 final.

Union opened the scoring 6:26 into the game. Mike Vecchione attempted to dump the puck into the Maine zone on net. The puck deflected off the glove of Maine goalie Matt Morris (Ridgewood, New Jersey) and trickled past the goal line, to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead. Daniel Ciampini and Sebastien Gingras each assisted on the goal.

Union made is a 2-0 game at 5:31 of the third period. Jeff Taylor found Kevin Shier who skated the puck into the Maine zone. He found Matt Wilkins in front of the goal and Wilkins deflected the puck past Morris for his first goal of the season.

Spencer Foo added an empty-net goal at 18:49 to give Union the 3-0 win.

Union, who improves to 3-0-0 on the season, outshot Maine 32-29 in the game. The Black Bears, who fall to 0-3-0, were 0-for-2 with the man advantage. Union also finished 0-for-2 on the power play.
