BOSTON - Freshman Jack Eichel scored 2:20 into overtime to lift the No. 2/3 Boston University men's ice hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Maine on Friday evening at Agganis Arena.

Trailing 2-0 entering the third, the Terriers got on the board with a tally by junior Ahti Oksanen with 15:10 left in regulation. The goal was set up by Eichel, who sent a cross-slot pass to Oksanen, who fired and scored from the right circle.

Just over four minutes later, junior Matt Lane tucked a shot inside the left post off a drop pass by sophomore Nick Roberto to knot the game and send it to overtime.

In the opening moments of overtime, BU captain Matt Grzelcyk drew a major penalty on Maine's Jordan Leen, who had earlier scored a shorthanded goal to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The hitting from behind penalty put the Terriers up a player for the remainder of the extra session and Eichel took full advantage of it on a power-play rush. Eichel got the puck from fellow rookie Brandon Fortunato behind the BU net and skated up the left side before getting around a defender. Instead of trying to get past the next defender, Eichel used him as a screen to Maine goaltender Sean Romeo and wristed a shot from the left circle over Romeo's left shoulder to end the game.

Junior Matt O'Connor turned in a 26-save performance in the BU goal while Sean Romeo turned aside 33 shots for the Black Bears.

With the win, BU improves to 7-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in Hockey East play. The Black Bears fall to 3-8-1 on the year with a 2-4-0 conference mark.

Maine opened the scoring 7:33 into the contest when Ben Hutton gathered a rebound at the foot of the left circle before using a spin shot to find the back of the net. Cam Brown and Liam Pecararo each assisted the play.

BU was skating on a power play to start the second period, but instead of potting an equalizer, it allowed a shorthanded goal. Leen took a pass from Devin Shore along the right boards and skated in before reaching at the crease and pushing the puck past O'Connor.

Faced with only its second two-goal deficit of the season, the Terriers came out of the second intermission determined to cut into the visitors' lead.

Eichel blocked a Maine shot in the high slot to kickstart a rush. The freshman traded passes with junior Danny O'Regan, who was skating up the left side, before he found Oksanen on the inner edge of the right circle. Oksanen sent it home for his fifth goal of the year at the 4:50 mark to make it a one-goal affair.

BU's third forward line had an impressive showing on the evening and was rewarded when it mustered the game-tying goal. Freshman A.J. Greer skated behind the net before connecting with Roberto in the right slot. Roberto spotted Lane across the slot with a backhand pass and Lane knocked it home with 10:57 left in regulation.

The Terriers doubled up Maine, 12-6, edge in shots after the second period and held a 36-28 advantage for the game. BU went 1-of-4 on the power play and successfully killed off all four of the Black Bears' chances with the man advantage.
