ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team honored its 1999 National Championship team pregame and then battled Boston University tough, but in the end fell to the third-ranked Terriers 3-1 on Friday night at Alfond Arena. A short-handed goal late in the second period proved to the difference in the game.

Maine scored on its second shot of the game to take an early 1-0 lead. Just prior to a change, Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) passed the puck up to Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) in the neutral zone. Swavely then fed Connor Leen (Chester, N.Y.) who had his initial shot blocked. The rebound came right back to him and his shot from the extended goal line beat Boston University netminder Matt O'Connor 1:13 into the game.

The Black Bears held the lead until midway through the second period. On the power play, Evan Rodrigues looked as if he would shoot the puck, but instead found Ahti Oksanen in the opposite circle. He fired the puck past Maine goalie Sean Romeo (Cary, North Carolina) to tie the score a goal apiece. Danny O'Regan also picked up an assist on the goal.

The Terriers took the lead with a short-handed goal with just 14 seconds remaining in the second period. Jack Eichel stole the puck in the defensive zone, skated the length of the ice before dishing to Danny O'Regan just outside the crease. He deflected the puck by Romeo to give the Terriers the 2-1 lead.

Boston University iced the game with an empty-net goal by Eichel at 19:23. Doyle Somerby banked the puck off the glass and it went right to Eichel in the defensive zone. He carried the puck up the ice and deposited it into the empty net, giving the Terriers an insurance goal.

The teams finished the game with 28 shots apiece. Maine was scoreless in three power play chances, while BU converted one of its four opportunities. Maine falls to 3-7-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in Hockey East play. Boston University improves to 6-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 in conference play.

Romeo made 25 saves in goal for the Black Bears and falls to 1-4-0 on the season. O'Connor stopped 27 shots for the Terriers and improves to 5-1-0.

The two teams return to action in a rematch of tonight's contest on Friday, Nov. 21 at Agganis Arena in Boston, Mass. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
