News and notes from the upcoming weekend of Hockey East action

#4 Boston College vs. New Hampshire (home and home)

- New Hampshire can secure a playoff position with four points this weekend.

- The last time these two faced off was Nov. 1, when the Wildcats earned a 1-0 shutout win at the Whittemore Center thanks to a tipped overtime goal from Angus Crookshank (North Vancouver, B.C.)

- The Eagles officially clinched the 2019-20 regular season title after defeating Boston University on Saturday night in the 282nd Battle of Comm. Ave with a 4-1 victory. It is the 17th regular season crown in program history.

- Jerry York's squad started their weekend off with a 6-1 win over Merrimack. Freshman standout Matt Boldy (Millis, Mass.) posted a pair of goals.

- Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) turned away 49 of the 51 total shots that came his way over the weekend, finishing up with a .961 save percentage.

- Hockey East Player and Rookie of the Month, Alex Newhook (St. John's, New.), tallied four points (2g, 2a) on the weekend to contribute to the two Eagle wins. Newhook's point streak now stands at 10 games with 10 goals and 11 assists.

- Newhook is the first player to sweep league player and rookie of the month awards in over five years and is the first player to do so at the national level in at least six season. On Thursday, Newhook was unanimously named the Hockey Commissioners Association National Player and Rookie of the Month.

- Most recently, the Wildcats earned one out of four possible conference points off a two-game series with #12 UMass Lowell. Before falling, 3-2, to the River Hawks on Saturday, they battled to a 2-2 draw at the end of overtime play on Friday. Mike Robinson (Bedford, N.H.) recorded 27 saves to get the tie.

#18 Providence at #15 Maine

- #18 Providence will travel to Orono for a Friday night puck drop against the #15 Black Bears in a crucial final regular season game for both teams. Providence's playoff hopes are on the line as a win secures a postseason position, but a tie or loss will leave the Friars' destiny in the hands of the results across the league.

- Maine needs a win and help from UMass Lowell and/or Boston University to secure home ice.

- It has only been six days since the Friars last saw Maine. In a single game weekend for both squads this past week, Providence earned a 3-2 victory at Schneider Arena. NCAA point leader Jack Dugan (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded a goal and an assist, giving him 52 points on 10 goals and 42 assists.

- Maine's Jeremy Swayman (Anchorage, Alaska) made 30 saves in the outing. The junior netminder was named Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Month for February after leading Hockey East in February with a 1.55 goals against average and .950 save percentage, both of which were good for fifth nationally among all netminders. His two shutouts were also the most in the league and were second in the country.

#12 UMass Lowell vs. UConn

- To round out regular season play, the #12 River Hawks will host the UConn Huskies Friday night at the Tsongas Center. Earlier this season, these two partook in a home and home weekend. After ending the first game in a 3-3 tie, UConn proceeded to grab a 2-1 win to round out the series.

- With a win or tie, UConn can clinch a top-four seed in the Hockey East Tournament, the Huskies' highest finish in the league ever, and home ice in the quarterfinals.

- Most recently, the Huskies earned two points from a split series with then-#8 UMass. In Friday night's 3-2 victory, goals came from Carter Berger (North Vancouver, B.C.), Marc Gatcomb (Woburn, Mass.) and Kale Howarth (Red Deer, Alta.). The two final tallies came with just 1:31 and 8 seconds remaining, respectively, to pull the Huskies out of a one-goal deficit and secure the last-minute victory.

- #12 UMass Lowell took three out of four possible points from a pair of match ups with New Hampshire, strengthening its position among the top four teams in Hockey East. After a 2-2 draw on Friday night, the River Hawks rallied to defeat UNH, 3-2, on Saturday. Netminder Tyler Wall (Leamington ,Ont.) recorded 50 saves on 54 shots he faced over the weekend, and sophomore forward Sam Knoblauch (Rochester, Mich.) scored twice.

#9 Massachusetts vs. Vermont

- For each of their last games of the 2019-20 regular season, Vermont travels down to Amherst to face off with #9 UMass on Thursday night. This past January these two lined up twice, the Minutemen claiming two victories.

- The Catamounts are coming off a weekend sweep of then-#12 Northeastern, earning the first two wins in league play of 2019-20 and celebrating Head Coach Kevin Sneddon's 300th career win as a head coach and 250th victory behind the Vermont bench.

- Stefanos Lekkas (Elburn, Ill.) was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week after blocking 53 of 56 shots he faced from the high-powered Huskies offense. Lekkas currently sits eighth all time on the NCAA career saves list with 3,869 stops.

- Junior forward Bryce Misley (Calgary, Alta.) netted two goals, including the game winner, on Saturday night to secure the weekend sweep.

- The Minutemen are coming off a split with UConn last weekend. After falling to the Huskies, 3-2, on Friday night in Hartford, they rallied for a 4-3 homeice win on Saturday. The victory clinched home ice for UMass for the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East Tournament.

- Hockey East Player of the Week John Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) ended the weekend with six points (3g, 3a). With both UMass goals on Friday, the game-winner on Saturday, and three assists along the way, Leonard has reached the 100-career point milestone. He is the sixth member of the 50-goal, 100-point club in UMass history.

#16 Northeastern vs. Boston University (home and home)

- For the final weekend of the 2019-20 regular season, the #16 Northeastern Huskies match up with Boston University for a two-game series with significant playoff implications. The two rivals have faced off twice already this season, the Terriers winning the first contest, and the second ending in an official 4-4 tie in the 2020 Beanpot championship game. The Huskies proceeded to claim the Beanpot title in a second period of overtime.

- In a race to the finish line, the Northeastern will look to pick up as many conference points possible after coming off a pair of losses at Vermont this past weekend. Boston University can finish anywhere from fourth to ninth place, while Northeastern needs four points to secure their playoff position without the help of results around the league.

- Boston University dropped a 4-1 result in the 282nd Battle Of Comm. Ave last Saturday. Senior captain Patrick Curry (Schaumburg, Ill.) recorded the lone Terrier goal at 8:52 of the third period.
