ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team lost in a close game against the Catamounts of Vermont, 3-2.
Vermont came out and was able to strike first in the game, as Kristina Shanahan scored her fifth goal of the season at the 6:12 mark in the first period. Lily Humphrey (6) and Ali O'Leary (5) picked up assits.
The Black Bears would battle back as Ida Press fired a slap shot from the blue line to tie the game at 1-1 with 10:06 remaining in the first period. For Press, it was her fourth goal of the season, as Liga Miljone (10) and Ali Beltz (10) picked up assists.
The Catamounts would strike twice in the second period, giving them a 3-1 lead into the third. Maude Poulin-Labelle scored her eighth goal of the season and Corinne McCool scored her eighth goal of the season. McCool (8) picked up the assists on the Labelle goal while Eve-Audrey Picard (6,7) picked up assists on both goals.
Maine would bounce back, as Michelle Weis scored her first goal of the season off of a hard slap shot from Nicole Pateman (2) that Tereza Vanisova (11) then tipped on net, where Weis was waiting to capitalize on the chance.
As Maine pulled their goaltender, Carly Jackson, with a 1:49 left on the clock, the Catamounts goaltender Blanka Skodova was up to the task as she stalled any late game heroics from the Black Bears. Skodova finished with 23 saves in the game, while Jackson finished with 25 saves.
Maine, who stands at 7-9-2, 4-7-1 in conference action, will host Franklin Pierce University of Saturday, Dec. 14. The host cite will be located in Falmouth, Maine at the Family Ice Center. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
