ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine Black Bears lost a close one to the Catamount of Vermont, 3-2.
In the first period, Tereza Vanisova gave Maine the early lead, scoring just 1:52 into the game. The breakaway goal was her 10th goal of the season. Brittany Colton (8) assisted on the play.
Vermont would answer back late in the first period, as Kristina Shanahan scored her fourth goal of the season at the 17:53 mark. Lily Humphrey (5) and Sara Levesque (5) picked up assists on the play.
The Catamount would strike first in the second period as Ali O'Leary scored her third goal of the season at 8:44 into the period. Eve-Audrey Picard (5) and Sara Levesque (6) picked up assists.
Maine would battle back, tying the game at 2-2 as Ida Kuoppala put in a backhand shot on the Catamounts goaltender, Natalie Ferenc. Kuoppala's goal was her seventh of her rookie season, as Vendula Pribylova (5) and Nicole Pateman (1) picked up the assists.
Ultimately, it would be the Catamounts who would strike last, as Corinne McCool scored her seventh goal of the season with 9:01 left in the game. Therese Schafzah (9) and Val Caldwell (11) picked up assists on the game-winning goal.
Carly Jackson picked up 22 saves in the contest, while Ferenc finished with just 10.
Maine, who falls to 7-8-2 on the season and to 4-6-1 in conference action, will host the Catamounts for a second time on Saturday, Dec. 7 as they look for redemption against their conference rival. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
