ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey team spent little time moving to 1-0 on the new season, defeating the Pioneers of Sacred Heart University 4-0 on the first night of the new season.

The first period got off to a fast start for the Black Bears, finding the net twice within the first 2:03 of the game. Liga Miljone netted Maine's first goal of the 2019-20 campaign, coming off a feed from Maddie Giordano at the 1:09 mark into the first period. Seconds later, at 2:03 into the period, Tereza Vanišová netted her first goal of the season, giving her 99 career points, while also giving Claire Coffman her first career point, an assist. Brittany Colton had an assist during the play as well.

The second period was a defensive period until the later stages. Both Frankie Sanchez of Sacred Heart and Loryn Porter for Maine were on top of their game, stopping every shot they faced. With 3:01 remaining in the period, the Black Bears were able to break through, scoring their third goal of the game. Liga Miljone picked up her second score for the Black Bears, and assisting on the play was Tereza Vanišová, who picked up her 100th career collegiate point in the process.

Tereza Vanišová wasn't done yet though. As the third period of action got underway, she netted her second goal of the game, 3rd overall point, as the Black Bears took a 4-0 lead over the Pioneers. Brittany Colton picked up her 2nd assist of the game on the play as well.

That goal would conclude the scoring for the game, as Loryn Porter picks up the win and a shutout in the first game of the 2019-20 season. Porter had 17 saves to hold down the net for Maine. Frankie Sanchez is handed the loss, accumulating 41 saves as the Black Bears outshot their opponents 45-17 in the contest.

Maine controlled almost all facets of the game, winning the faceoff battle 40-27 and going 2-5 on the power play, while also shutting down the Pioneers on all four of their power play opportunities.

The Black Bears will head back on to the ice on Sat. Oct 5, at 1:00 p.m., to play game two of the double header weekend against the Pioneers of Sacred Heart University.
