BURLINGTON, Vt. - Melissa Black registered 30 saves for her first shutout of the season to secure a win for the Vermont Catamounts (3-7-4, 2-6-2 WHEA) over the Syracuse Orange (4-9-1, 4-3-0 CHA) on the opening night of the Windjammer Classic Friday at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

COACH'S QUOTE

"It was a great team win tonight," said head coach Jim Plumer. "It felt good to score early and set the tone and Melissa Black was huge for us with a shutout. That said, we are going to have to play a really clean game tomorrow night against a very strong Minnesota team. We are looking forward to the challenge."

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Catamounts took the lead three minutes in to the game and never looked back as Theresa Schafzahl netted her third goal of the year. Ève-Audrey Picard centered a pass to the rookie who was waiting alone in the slot where she wristed the puck over the shoulder of Maddi Welch (18 saves).

- Sammy Kolowrat tallied her first goal of the season in the second period on the power play to double Vermont's lead. Picard added her second assist of the night as she scooped up a pass from Kristina Shanahan and found Kolowrat at the top of the zone where the senior captain rifled a shot.

- Syracuse outshot the Cats 12-6 in the third period, but Black held the Orange of the scoresheet stopping all shots faced in a clinching effort.

NOTES

- Abby Cleary was credited with the secondary assist on Schafzahl's goal for her first point as a Catamount.

- Black's shutout was the second of the season for Vermont. Blanka Škodová blanked UNH early in November.

- With the victory, the Cats Win, Community Wins campaign and Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate another $100 to the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington, bringing this year's total to 105 wins and $10,500.
