ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team scorched first game of the weekend series with the Sacred Heart Pioneers 8-0 at the Alfond Arena Friday afternoon.

Loryn Porter earned her second straight shutout, turning away 11 of the Pioneers shots for the victory. Her support came in a record-setting 52 shots on goal from her offense, which pushed the Black Bears to open the season 3-0-0, while dropping Sacred Heart to 2-1-0. The last time Maine scored eight goals in a game was against Sacred Heart in an 8-1 win on Sept. 9, 2009 against Sacred Heart.

First year players once again made an impact with both first period goals scored by Maine's newest additions. Ali Beltz scored her first collegiate goal to open the scoring, cutting across the middle slot and firing in a hard wrist shot in. Liga Miljone scored the second goal of the night, after she created her own opportunity. Cutting in from the corner across the slot, stuffing in a close attempt on goal. The first shot got kicked out to the corner where it was handled by Celine Tedenby and shovelled back to Miljone who captured it on the empty net.

It took less than 30 seconds for Tereza Vanisova to find the back of the net in the second period. Liga Miljone found the forward alone in the face-off circle. Vanisova used some nifty stick work and flipped the puck into the open net. Ida Press was also credited with an assist on the Black Bear goal.

Ally Johnson was the second Black Bear to post her first collegiate goal during the afternoon, coming in unassisted as she snapped up a turnover before firing it home. Daria Tereshkina scored on a feed from Liga Miljone and Brittany Colton added her first of the season to make it 6-0.

Cailey Hutchison joined the goal parade after scoring an unbelievable goal. The senior grabbed the puck behind the net from teammate Maddie Giordano and wrapped her shot around the net and between the netminder's legs. The last time the Black Bears scored five goals in a period was in the third frame of the Sept. 25, 2010 game against the Pioneers en route to an 11-0 win.

Tereshkina scored on the power play for her second goal of the contest and the final tally of the night. She received a pass from Vanisova. After initially kicking the puck, Tereshkina recovered and trickled the score passed Erban for the Black Bear's eighth goal.

The Black Bears return to the ice tomorrow night, Saturday, Oct. 13 when they host the second game of the weekend series against Sacred Heart.
