ORONO, Maine - The fans at the Alfond Arena on Friday afternoon witnessed three power play goals scored in the matchup between the University of Maine women's hockey and the University of New Hampshire. Both teams saw their fair share of time inside the penalty box as the Wildcats (13-10-7, 8-7-5 WHEA) tied up the score on their second power play goal to push the game into overtime. Five scoreless minutes flew by leaving Maine (16-9-4, 10-6-3 WHEA) with their third conference tie, 2-2.
Wildcat defender Julia Fedeski hit the back of the net first, blasting a deep unexpected shot from the blue line off a one-timed pass from line mate, Marie-Jo Pelletier. With this goal, UNH took an early lead less than three minutes into the match as they took advantage of the first power play of the afternoon.
Closing out the first period, Maine responded with back-to-back goals in under 60 seconds to advance into the middle frame with a 2-1 lead. Josefine Engmann presented Maine's first scoring opportunity ripping a shot towards goal, but the puck was stopped short as it deflected off Fedeski. Brooke Stacey got a piece of it just before Ebba Strandberg tucked it away for her second power play goal of the season. Stacey and Engmann were awarded assists on the play.
In that same minute, with 17:56 on the clock, Alyson Matteau skated the puck down the entire length of the ice, weaving and bobbing through players to give the Black Bears their first lead of the afternoon with an unassisted goal. This was her fourth goal of the season.
After killing off a couple more penalties, the Black Bears struggled to fend off the Wildcats with a 5-3 man advantage on the ice. With 15:42 left to play in regulation, UNH capitalized with their second power play goal of the night. Amy Schlagel grabbed her second point of the day after registering an assist on the Wildcats' first goal; she followed up on a rebounded shot by Fedeski to tie up the score, 2-2.
Maine had the advantage going into overtime after two UNH players were sent to the penalty box in the final eight seconds of regulation. Unfortunately, the Wildcats put up a fight holding off the Black Bears long enough to return to even play and close out overtime with a draw.
Net minder Carly Jackson recorded 15 saves for Maine while Ava Boutilier tallied a total of 23.
The two teams will face-off again tomorrow, Saturday, February 3 at the Alfond Arena for another 2:00 p.m. puck drop.
