ORONO, Maine - Lydia Murray's goal, 13:01 into the second period broke a 2-2 tie and proved to be the game-winner as the University of Maine women's ice hockey team knocked off No. 9 Quinnipiac by a final of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
Carly Jackson was impressive between the pipes for Maine (1-1-0) as she turned away 32 saves to earn her first win of the season. In all, Quinnipac held the edge in shots, 34-24.
Tereza Vanisova led the offensive attack for Maine, tallying a goal and adding a pair of assists.
Brittany Kucera tallied her first collegiate goal to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead, 15:37 into the first period. Vanisova began the play, finding Michelle Weis, who sent a pass out to the point where Kucera settled and ripped a shot on net. The puck was originally stopped in front but was swept back across the goalline, giving Maine an early lead.
Maine was able to extend its lead to 2-0 when Vendula Pribylova found the back of the net, 3:34 into the second period. Kucera began the action once again as her up ice pass found Tereza Vanisova streaking through center ice. Vanisova broke in and put a shot on net which was turned away by Quinnipiac netminder Allison Small. However, Pribylova was able to put away the loose puck for her first goal of the season.
Quinnipiac answered, scoring a pair of goals over the next eight minutes to knot the score at 2-2. Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout cut the Maine lead in half with her goal at 5:17 of the second period before Kate MacKenzie's power play goal at 11:29 tied the game.
The Black Bears responded as Murray's 4-on-4 goal regained a one goal edge for Maine. Ebba Strandberg controlled the puck at the top of the zone, dumping it off to Alyson Matteau who fired a shot on net. Maine was again able to win the loose puck when Murray beat new Quinnipiac goaltender Abbie Ives for Maine's third goal of the game.
The Bobcats pulled their goaltender with 2:01 remaining in regulation but the plan would backfire as Vanisova broke out of the Maine defensive end and finished off the rush with a goal, giving Maine a 4-2 lead. Quinnipiac was unable to chip into the lead as Maine moved to 1-1-0 on the year with the victory.
The Black Bears are back in action on Friday, Oct. 6 when they travel to take on RPI. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
