ORONO, Maine - Despite tying up the score twice in the first and second period, the No. 9 Black Bears struggled to fend off the Warriors from doubling their score late in the game as Maine (16-7-3, 10-4-2 WHEA) fell to Merrimack College (9-15-3, 4-11-2 WHEA), 4-2, on Saturday afternoon during their annual 'Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer Game' sponsored by FairPoint Communications.
Leading scorer for the Warriors, Katelyn Rae, struck gold today, scoring all four of Merrimack's goals to lead them to victory, accumulating 18 goals at this point in the season. Her first was just 1:33 into the match breaking away to a one-on-one with Carly Jackson in net. After Maine tied up the score just minutes later, she reclaimed the one goal separation midway through the first period hitting the top-shelf with a wrist shot a stride away from Jackson.
Rae's third goal was captured just seconds into a 5-on-3 man advantage for Merrimack after two Maine players were sent to the penalty box. This goal once again broke the possibility of another tie-game for putting the Warriors ahead, 3-2. Her fourth and final goal was captured with 1:08 left on the clock in regulation. Maine had pulled Jackson just one minute prior and a lucky clear just barely knocked off the inside of the post into the net to finish out the match.
Lydia Murray tied up the score for Maine, 1-1, in the first period just 41 seconds following Rae's opening goal. She crashed the net reaching her stick out just in time to poke in a shot by Catherine Tufts into the back left corner just out of reach of Samantha Ridgewell in net. Alyson Matteau earned her 9th assist of the season putting the play into action.
Evening up the score, 2-2, midway through the second frame was Cailey Hutchison deflecting a rocket of a shot by Josefine Engmann from the point. Kicking off this scoring opportunity, Engmann earned her first NCAA point with the assist.
Six different players for the Warriors picked up assists by the end of the day. In between the pipes, Ridgewell achieved her sixth win of the season stopping 31 scoring opportunities. As for Jackson, she turned away 21 shots by Merrimack.
The Black Bears will be back on the road next weekend as the venture down to Storrs, CT for a two-game series against the University of Connecticut, starting with a puck drop at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
