HANOVER, N.H. - The Black Bears emerged with a fiery passion to avenge their slip-up the day before, as they took down Dartmouth in a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon. Tereza Vanišová dominated the ice with a goal and three assists while Brooke Stacey and Ebba Strandberg each pulled out a trio of points.
Loryn Porter earned her second NCAA win today, holding down the fort in net for Maine as she turned away 19 shots.
Not even four minutes into the match, the Black Bears seized a speedy 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals first from Vendula Pribylova followed by Catherine Tufts not even 60 seconds later. Pribylova found the back of the net on her own with an unassisted point just 2:32 into the opening frame after stealing the puck from the Big Green on the blue line, for her third goal this season. The sophomore also grabbed her third assist of the season off of Tufts goal by initiating the scoring play bringing the puck up the ice, passing it to Vanisova in the middle who quickly scooted the puck towards Tufts patiently waiting by the back post.
Cutting the score deficit for Dartmouth in half, Hailey Noronha intercepted a pass near the blue line and skated the puck to an opening with a clear view of Maine's goal. She swung back her stick and sent a slap shot sailing top shelf into net, just over Porter's right shoulder. With 13:11 on the clock, the Big Green trailed 2-1 as Noronha achieved her first goal of the season, unassisted.
Less than 30 seconds later, the Black Bears reclaimed their 2-point lead as Stacey won a faceoff in Dartmouth's defensive zone passing it off to Michelle Weis who distributed the puck to Vanisova taking a wrist shot to roof the puck into the net. With her 20th career goal, the sophomore gave Maine a 3-1 lead with 12:54 remaining in the first period.
Midway through the first frame, Stacey took full advantage of the placement of Dartmouth's defenders standing in front of goaltender Christine Honor, screening her shot for her as the puck hit the back of the net. Weis and Strandberg earned assists on the goal to improve the score to 4-1.
Stacey not only closed out the scoring in the first period, but also opened up the scoring in the second, barely a minute into the period she received a pass from Vanisova, settled it, and snuck it right through traffic between Honor's legs.
In the final five minutes of the second period, Vanisova duked out a Big Green defender leaving her perplexed on the ice. She continued toward the net and just as everyone thought she'd shoot, Vanisova dumped the puck back to Cailey Hutchison who finished it with ease. Strandberg also helped out with her second assist of the day, giving Maine a 6-1 lead.
Dartmouth switched up their lines going into the third period as Shannon Ropp stepped onto the ice to protect the net, seeing time in her third game this season. She tallied a total of 10 saves in net throughout the final 20 minutes while Honor stopped 14 shots in the first two periods.
On a power play, just minutes into the final frame, Cecilia Lopez sent a one-timer flying towards net to grab her second goal of the weekend and cut the Black Bears lead to 6-2. Assists were handed out to Dartmouth's two leaders in points, Carol Shaunessy and Noronha.
Maggie Blair blanketed the Black Bears win with an extra goal for security in the final two minutes of the match to produce a final score of 7-2. This was Blair's first NCAA point as she played in her fourth game as a Black Bear. Tallying assists on the final goal were Strandberg for her third of the day and Jessica Jacques.
The Maine women's ice hockey team will have one day to recoup before hosting Northeastern for an evening match (7 p.m.) on Tuesday, Nov 7.
