BOSTON - The No. 8 Northeastern women's hockey team opened the 2017-18 season with a hard-fought 1-1 tie against defending national champion and preseason No. 1 Clarkson on Friday evening at Matthews Arena.

Senior captain Shelby Herrington gave the Huskies the lead 22 seconds into the second period, firing home a centering pass from redshirt junior Taytum Clairmont at the right of the net. The advantage held deep into the third period, before the Golden Knights eventually equalized when Loren Gabel poked home a rebound on the rush.

The score held through overtime, despite Northeastern dominating the extra session with a late power-play chance to finish with a 32-23 shot advantage.

Junior goaltender Brittany Bugalski was strong in net with 22 saves, while Clarkson netminder Shea Tiley was also up to the task with 31 stops.

Northeastern held Clarkson off the board on its only power-play of the game, but could not find a way through on the numerical advantage as the Golden Knights killed off all four NU chances.

Senior McKenna Brand led all players with seven shots on goal, while junior Kasidy Anderson and redshirt junior Tori Sullivan each recorded four shots apiece.

The teams will square off again on Saturday with the opening faceoff set for 3 p.m. from Matthews Arena.
