CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Makenna Newkirk collected a hat trick and Daryl Watts scored two goals as the No. 3 Boston College women's hockey team earned a 5-2 win over Northeastern in the first round of the 40th Women's Beanpot, which the Eagles are hosting at Kelley Rink.
Katie Burt made 36 saves in the win, including 16 in the second period, as Boston College (25-2-3) punched its ticket to next Tuesday's Beanpot Championship game, where the team will meet Boston University, who topped Harvard 3-2 in the earlier first-round game. BC will now play in its sixth-straight Beanpot Championship game. BC has won the last two tournaments and three of the last five. Northeastern will face Harvard in next week's Consolation game at 4:30 p.m.
Watts staked Boston College to a 2-0 lead after the first period, but Northeastern (13-14-3) rallied to tie the game by 10:34 of the second period after goals by Andrea Renner and Shelby Herrington. Newkirk's first of the day at 13:06 put BC back on top at 3-2, although it looked as though the Huskies evened it up again at 16:26 when Renner thought she scored her second of the game. However, after video review, the decision was overturned because of Northeastern's goaltender interference on Burt during the play.
After almost 15:00 of scoreless hockey in the third period, Newkirk netted her second of the day before she scored a shorthanded, empty-net goal from the red line at 18:51 while Northeastern had a 6-on-4 advantage.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Feb. 9, when the team hosts New Hampshire at Kelley Rink at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, the Eagles' four seniors will be honored with Senior Day ceremonies. After the game, BC will be presented with the 2017-18 Hockey East Regular-Season trophy, which they clinched on Jan. 27. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3, which is available on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st, 8:48 | BC GOAL, 1-0 - Toni Ann Miano picked up a Northeastern pass up ice off the boards and immediately sent a pass up ice through the center of the neutral zone. Daryl Watts picked it up just outside the Northeastern blue line, skating in for a one-on-one with Huskies goaltender Brittany Bugaklski. Watts stickhandled through the slot before sliding a backhand under Bugalski's right pad for a 1-0 Eagles lead.
1st, 15:06 | BC GOAL, 2-0 - Caitrin Lonergan beat a Northeastern player to the rebound of Lauren Kelly's shot from the point, and chipped it out of the zone. She picked up Watts to her left, and created a 2-on-1 with Kelly backtracking between them. Lonergan pushed a square pass to Watts in the high slot, and Watts faked the near-side forehand before sliding a backhand past a sprawling Bugalski on her way past the goal.
2nd, 4:19 | NU GOAL, 2-1 - With the Eagles looking to clear the defensive zone with a lofted pass, Northeastern's Skylar Fontaine leapt at the blue line to keep it in. She settled and fed Andrea Renner down below the faceoff dot to her right, and Renner whipped a low wrist shot under Katie Burt as she moved sideways, pulling the Huskies within one.
2nd, 10:34 | NU GOAL, 2-2 - Taytum Clairmont chased down a wrap-around pass behind the goal, and played a centering pass to Kasidy Anderson in the slot. Burt made a save on Anderson's attempt, but Shelby Herrington slid in from the faceoff dot and got enough stick on the puck to poke it past Burt and even the score at 2-2.
2nd, 13:06 | BC GOAL, 3-2 - Maegan Beres collected a pass off the boards at center ice, and maintained possession as a Northeastern player collapsed on her. The puck poked out to Makenna Newkirk, who skated into the zone with Kenzie Kent on a 2-on-1. Newkirk fed Kent out wide right and as the two skated deeper in the zone, Kent returned the pass for Newkirk to whip it in past Bugalski from the doorstep and put BC back ahead.
2nd, 16:26 | NU GOAL WAIVED OFF - Renner thought she had scored her second of the day to tie the game up again, but after review, her effort was waived off. Brooke Hobson chased down a puck in the Huskies zone and skated through the neutral zone and into the BC end before putting a wrist shot on Burt. The rebound popped loose and Renner had two attempts saved by Burt before pushing her third effort past her. However, Hobson had collapsed on Burt during the sequence, taking Burt out of the play, and the referees overturned the goal call after video review.
3rd, 14:43 | BC GOAL, 4-2 - After BC had trapped the puck in the zone and passed it deep, Newkirk curled off the wall and played Sommerfield at the center point. Sommerfield played a fake shot off to Bugalski's right for Kent, who picked it up off the back wall and threw a backwards pass back out into the slot for Newkirk. The junior collected the pass and reached around a Northeastern defender, giving her an angle over Bugalski's shoulder and a two-goal BC lead.
3rd, 18:51 | BC GOAL, 5-2 (SHG, ENG) - With a draw in the neutral zone off to the left of the BC bench, Bugalski pulled and the Huskies on a power play, Northeastern won it and tried to enter the zone with the 6-on-4 advantage. Maddi Hartman corralled the puck and broke in down the left side, but Toni Ann Miano disrupted her momentum and poked the puck away. Miano then chipped the puck up and out of the zone, where Newkirk got on the end of it at the red line, getting just enough stick on it to send it toward the open net and in for the shorthanded, empty-net goal and a three-goal final advantage.
GAME NOTES
- Boston College will now play for its eighth Beanpot championship next week ... BC has won the tournament seven previous times: 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016 and 2017
- BC is now 37-37-2 all-time in the Beanpot, and 30-15-2 since becoming a varsity program (1995-present)
- The Eagles are 11-5-0 at Kelley Rink in Beanpot play, including a 10-3-0 mark as a varsity team
