STORRS, Conn. - For the second time this season, the UConn women's ice hockey team took a nationally-ranked Boston College program to the limit at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum - with Saturday's contest as the latest example.
The Huskies (4-5-4, 0-4-3 WHEA) fought to a 3-3 tie with the No. 2 Eagles (10-1-2, 5-0-2 WHEA) by capitalizing on two areas that they have struggled with this season - power plays and penalty kills.
"Special teams has been the focus for us the past couple of weeks, so we're starting to find our way in that regard," said head coach Chris MacKenzie. "We killed six power plays off, but you're eventually going to let one in against that team. For us, it's a good sign."
Following Friday night's 3-0 loss to the Eagles in the Conte Forum, UConn looked like a different team at Freitas - converting on two of its three power plays and making Boston College earn each chance on net.
Earlier this season, the Huskies played the Eagles to a 2-2 tie at Freitas back on Oct. 20. In three meetings with BC, UConn finishes the season series with a 0-1-2 record - the only team to earn ties against the top-five Eagles all season.
"It was a great battle; we competed well...I'm proud of our team. It's a hard-earned point against a very good team after not getting it done, but competing, on Friday night," said MacKenzie. "Hopefully this can be a turning point in our season."
Sophomore Catherine Crawley, junior Rebecca Lindblad and freshman Natalie Snodgrass scored goals for the Huskies - for Snodgrass, her team-leading eighth tally of the season. Sophomore goalie Morgan Fisher earned the start, making 30 saves between the pipes.
The Huskies held two leads on Saturday - the first coming after Crawley's goal, which came at 7:35 on a power play in the first period when she buried a puck from inside the BC crease as part of a scramble in front of the net.
The Eagles answered with nearly one minute remaining in the period, as Caitrin Lonergan beat Fisher from the left side of the net. BC took a lead in the second period at 6:23, when freshman star Daryl Watts scored off a pass from Lonergan.
Before the second period ended, Snodgrass had a breakaway toward the BC net. Her initial shot was saved by Eagles' goalie Katie Burt, but Lindblad cleaned up the rebound to tie the game, 2-2.
UConn scored just 38 seconds into the third period, taking advantage of a BC penalty that carried over from the end of the second. Snodgrass scored off passes from sophomore Briana Colangelo and freshman Morgan Wabick, giving UConn a 3-2 edge.
Just four minutes later, BC netted the equalizer again when Watts scored her second goal of the game. Had it not been for Fisher's great save with 5:14 remaining on a BC breakaway, the Huskies may not have reached overtime.
"We have full confidence in her (Fisher). She was unbelievable. She was standing on her head," said junior defender Jaime Fox.
UConn had the advantage in overtime, recording five shots to BC's one. Freshman Savannah Bouzide had a breakaway chance with 35 seconds remaining, but pushed her shot wide of the net.
BC held a 33-29 shots advantage in the game - this after UConn was outshot, 34-22, on Friday night. The Huskies killed off six of seven penalties and face-offs were tied, 36-36.
The Nutmeg Classic begins on Friday, Nov. 24, as the Huskies host Penn State, Quinnipiac and Yale in the two-day tournament. UConn plays the Nittany Lions on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Freitas Ice Forum, with Saturday's game depending on the previous day's results.
