PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's hockey team was defeated by the Vermont Catamounts, 5-2. Providence finishes the season with a 17-17-3 overall record and Vermont moves on to the Hockey East Semifinals with a 15-13-9 record.

Vermont jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first period. At 10:13 Alyssa Gorecki scored. Then the Catamounts scored two power play goals. Eve-Audrey Picard scored at (10:41) and Saana Valkama at 19:51.

The Catamounts gave up another power play goal at 5:59 of the second period by way of Alyssa Gorecki.

Providence tallied a power play goal of their own when Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) passed to Rachel Rockwell (Broadview Heights, Ohio) on the point, who took a slapshot that beat Vermont's Madison Litchfield's five-hole.

The Friars entered the third period down, 4-1. At 10:57 of the third Kate Friesen (Altona, Manitoba) scored her third goal of the weekend from the point. Carels rushed the zone and took a shot that ricocheted off of Litchfield's pad and to Lauren Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) on the half-wall. Klein passed to Friesen, whose shot beat Litchfield to the near post.

With the Friars down 4-2, Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) was pulled for the extra-man advantage. Despite generating offensive opportunities, Vermont's Eve-Audrey Picard scored an empty-netter to seal the game at 5-2.

Myers made 26 saves and Providence recorded 27 shots on goal.
