PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's hockey team defeated the Maine Black Bears, 3-2 at Schneider Arena on Oct. 28. The Friars scored three unanswered third period goals to defeat the Black Bears and win their first Hockey East game of the 2016-17 season. Providence improves to 4-5-0, 1-1-0 HE and Maine moves to 2-6-0, 1-3-0 HE.
Maine took a 1-0 lead in the first period at 16:26 when Catherine Tufts scored in a scrum in front of Providence's Alanna Serviss (Chicago, Ill.). Serviss made six saves in the first period and Maine's Carly Jackson made eight saves.
In the second period, Maine extended their lead to 2-0, again from Catherine Tufts at 3:31. Serviss turned aside four more shots in the period and Jackson stopped all 11 shots she faced.
The Friars opened the third period outshooting the Black Bears, 19-10. Just over eight minutes into the period Madison Sansone (Lockport, N.Y.) scored her first power play goal of the season, cutting Maine's lead to 2-1. Rachel Rockwell (Broadview Heights, Ohio) took a shot from the point that deflected to Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ontario), who took a shot that rang off the cross bar and landed on the back door for Sansone to bat the puck in.
Providence added an extra-man advantage goal with 1:53 remaining in regulation to tie the game when Blair Parent (Blaine, Minn) tapped in a rebound. Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) moved the puck across the slot to Kate Friesen (Altona, Manitoba). Friesen took a one-timer that rebounded to Parent in the slot, who tapped home a goal to tie the game, 2-2.
The Friars continued offensive pressure and scored 43 seconds later when Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) scored her first collegiate goal and put Providence ahead 3-2. Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ontario) broke the puck out of the Friars' defensive zone to send Putigna and Dove on an odd-man rush. Putigna fed Dove trailing who then took a snap shot to beat Jackson.
Providence killed all four penalties taken and scored one power play goal. Serviss finished with 21 saves.
The Friars are back in action on Oct. 29 in North Andover, Mass. to face the Merrimack Warriors at 7:00 p.m. at Lawler Rink.
