HAMDEN, Conn. - A last second goal from junior Justine Fredette (Winnipeg, Manitoba) kept the UConn women's ice hockey team alive against Yale Friday and sent the game into overtime, but the Huskies ultimately fell to the Bulldogs in a shootout at High Point Solutions Arena.

UConn will meet No. 8/9 Quinnipiac in the consolation game of the Nutmeg Classic on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m. The shootout counts as a tie for both teams, so the Huskies are now 8-4-3 overall and Yale is now 4-5-2.

Junior goaltender Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec) stopped 38 total shots in over 63 minutes of play against the Bulldogs.

FIRST PERIOD

The Huskies and the Bulldogs played a scoreless first period, but Yale was dominant in shots 16-6 after the first 20 minute frame. Freshmen Erica D'Errico (Concord, N.H.), Catherine Crawley (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and Leona Sim (Vancouver, B.C.) all registered shots on target in the first, but all three were stopped by Yale goaltender Tera Hofmann.

Over halfway through the period, senior Kelly Harris (Canton, Mich.) fired a shot on goal, but it was again knocked away by Hofmann and the score remained 0-0.

Yale saw the first power play opportunity of the game 15:22 into the first period after junior Marisa Maccario (Marblehead, Mass.) was called for hooking.

Belanger made three big saves for UConn on the penalty kill. She racked up 16 saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless going into the first break.

SECOND PERIOD

The Huskies came out feisty at the start of the second period when they outshot Yale 5-1 in the very first minutes of the period and eventually closed the gap in shots to 18-14 in the first six minutes of the middle frame.

Sophomore Jaime Fox (Unionville, Ont.) kick started the action at the start of the period when she landed a nice shot on goal to start the Huskies' offensive stint. Junior Theresa Knutson (Onalaska, Wis.) added another shot on goal to UConn's running tally after she stole it at the blue line and took it in to goal.

Sophomore Rebecca Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) had back-to-back shots on goal, but was then called for interference to and had to take a seat for two minutes. UConn killed off Lindblad's penalty no problem, but the Huskies were not as successful the next time around.

Yale took the first lead of the game 10:35 into the second period when Julia Yetman capitalized on Yale's third power play opportunity of the game after D'Errico was penalized for hooking.

UConn saw its first power play chance just 20 seconds after Yale took the lead, but the Huskies were unable to find the equalizer. The Bulldogs held on to their 1-0 lead heading into the second intermission and maintained a 28-19 advantage on shots after the first two periods.

THIRD PERIOD

After the Huskies killed off a penalty for too many players on the ice at the start, UConn had back-to-back power play opportunities during the third period, but neither resulted in a goal.

The Huskies outshot the Bulldogs 13-5 in the third period as the Huskies hunted for a game-tying goal.

With an empty net and six players on the ice for UConn, Fredette nabbed the equalizer with just 11 seconds left on the clock to send the game into overtime. Lindblad assisted the game-tying goal after she found Fredette who buried it back door.

EXTRA TIME

UConn and Yale played a scoreless five minute overtime period. The Bulldogs outshot UConn 6-0 in the OT period, but Belanger made all six stops to keep the Huskies in it.

After the scoreless OT period, the game went into a shootout where Yale would go first.

Krista Yip-Chuck took the first attempt for the Bulldogs and she slid the puck behind Belanger's right pad on the ice. Junior Leah Lum (Richmond, B.C.) led the shootout for the Huskies and pulled a similar move to Yale and snuck it past Hofmann.

After Yale's Emma Vlasic scored five hole to keep the pressure on UConn, freshman Briana Colagnelo (Whitby, Ont.) scored an effortless goal to keep the shootout even 2-2. Yale's Phoebe Staenz made a third for the Bulldogs, but Hofmann stopped Knutson's shot to lift Yale past UConn.
