STORRS, Conn. - In a penalty-filled contest, the UConn women's hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision against No. 3/3 Quinnipiac Friday in its 2016-17 home opener at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
The Huskies are now 2-1 overall this season, while Quinnipiac extends its undefeated start to this year with a perfect 3-0 record. Both teams were cursed with penalties, eight going for Quinnipiac and nine for UConn for a whopping combined 17 penalties all game.
UConn held off Quinnipiac for almost the entirety of the first period, killing off three of four QU power plays, but the Bobcats snuck one in on the man-advantage with less than a minute on the clock to take a late 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Junior goaltender Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec) gave a stellar performance in net for the Huskies, recording 32 saves, 15 of which came in the second period where Belanger held Quinnipiac scoreless.
The UConn net minder made a crucial save for the Huskies with five minutes to play in the second period off a Quinnipiac breakaway. Belanger smothered the puck no problem and kept UConn in it only trailing by one goal after the second intermission.
Over 12 minutes had expired off the clock in the third when Quinnipiac extended its lead to 2-0 after Belanger made the initial save off a shot from the point but the Bobcats hacked away at the rebound until it found the back of the net.
UConn pulled their Belanger with 1:20 to play in the third period. Freshman Tristyn Svetek (Burlington, Ont.) came up with a huge empty-net save for the Huskies, but the Bobcats eventually found the open goal, securing the score at 3-0 in the very last seconds of the game.
