STORRS, Conn. - Behind two goals from junior Leah Lum (Richmond, B.C.), the UConn women's ice hockey team earned its first win at home this season, defeating Penn State 4-2 in game-two of the series Saturday at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
The Huskies improve to 4-2-1 overall heading into its first conference match-up of the season, while Penn State recorded its fifth loss of this year and is now 1-5-2.
FIRST PERIOD
Sophomore Rebecca Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) scored 14 seconds into the game to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead right at the start.
Lindblad tipped the puck in off a shot from the point from classmate Jaime Fox (Unionville, Ont.). Sophomore Nora Maclaine (Easton, Mass.) also earned an assist on the goal.
Penn State tied things up six minutes later when leading scorer, Laura Bowman, notched her first of the day 6:54 into the first period.
Freshman goaltender Morgan Fisher (Vernon, Conn.) was injured during the PSU goal and came off the ice for 1:05, but then returned to her place in goal. She stopped 16 shots in the first period alone.
There were no penalties assessed to either team in the first period and the Huskies and the Nittany Lions played a straight 20 minutes of 5-on-5 hockey. PSU outshot UConn 17-6 in the first period.
SECOND PERIOD
UConn was sent to the box first 2:41 into the second when junior Lindsay Roethlke (Buffalo, Minn.) was called for hooking. Penn State was called for slashing 15 seconds later and there was 1:45 of 4-on-4 hockey, but neither team could capitalize.
Penn State scored the only goal of the second period 8:55 into the frame. Bowman claimed credit for both Penn State goals and Amy Peterson was the primary assist on both.
The Huskies were forced to kill off another penalty, their only other penalty of the game, with just five minutes to play in the middle frame.
The Nittany Lions had a 27-12 shot advantage through the first two periods.
THIRD PERIOD
Coming out of the second intermission, Penn State leading UConn 2-1, junior Theresa Knutson (Onalaska, Wis.) tied the game up 2-2, scoring an unassisted goal one minute into the third period.
UConn had two power play opportunities in the third, but did not find the back of the net on either. Exactly two seconds after PSU's second penalty was release, Lum tallied the game-winning goal to make it 3-2 UConn with just over five minutes to play in the game.
Penn State pulled its goalie with 56 seconds on the clock, but did not make use of the extra player and Lum grabbed an empty net goal, her second of the game and fourth of the season.
The Huskies outshot the Nittany Lions 17-4 in the third period, but Penn State remained on top 31-29 in the shot count.
