ORONO, Me. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team was narrowly defeated by UConn by a final of 2-1 on Friday night at the Alfond Arena. The loss slips Maine to 9-20-1, 5-16-1 in Hockey East action while UConn improves to 14-13-4, 9-10-2 in league play.
Brooke Stacey netted the lone goal of the night for the Black Bears while Morgan Sakundiak added an assist.
Maine put the pressure on UConn, outshooting the Huskies 27-22. The Black Bears were 0-for-2 on the power play while UConn capitalized on one of its two chances with the extra skater.
Carly Jackson took the loss in net after making 20 saves. She falls to 6-17-1 on the year. UConn's Annie Belanger made 26 stops in net to improve to 11-11-4.
UConn broke the scoreless tie with the first of two goals for Rebecca Lindblad on the night. Skating on the power play, Jaime Fox's shot was deflected right to the stick of Lindblad who finished the play, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead 11:49 into the first period.
Stacey and the Black Bears tied the game at 1-1, 14:14 into the second. Sakundiak dug the puck out from behind the UConn net before feeding Stacey who found the back of the net for the 13th time this season.
UConn regained the lead just over three minutes later on Lindblad's second of the night. Marisa Maccario began the play on the blue line before her shot was blocked in front by Lindsay Roethke. Lindblad took advantage of the block, gathering the loose puck before tally the eventual game-winner.
Maine, which outshot UConn 9-6 in the final period, pulled Jackson for the final 2:57 but was unable to net the equalizer as UConn escaped with the 2-1 victory.
The two teams close the weekend series on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game marks Maine's final regular season home contest. Following the game, Maine will honor its five seniors.
