BURLINGTON, Vt. - Madison Sansone scored two goals to lead the Providence College Friars to a 4-1 Hockey East win over Vermont Friday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Sansone opened the scoring shorthanded for the Friars 21 seconds into the second period. After forcing a Vermont turnover Cassidy Carels threw a wrist shot towards Vermont's Madison Litchfield and the puck caromed high in the air. Sansone found the rebound and stashed it home for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Friars stretched their lead to two at the 7:21 mark of the second frame. Brittney Thunstrom fanned on a shot attempt in the slot, but her teammate Blair Parent pushed the puck back towards Thunstrom and her second shot found the back of the net through traffic. Ariana Buxman was credited with the secondary assist on Thunstrom's first goal of the season.

The Catamounts cut the Providence lead in half with just six seconds left in the second period. Dayna Colang and Gina Repaci skated into the Friars zone on a two-on-one rush. Repaci drew the Providence defender towards her before feathering a pass to Colang. Colang fired a wrist shot past Providence's Alanna Serviss for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Sansone reestablished the Friars two-goal lead 1:49 into the third period. Sansonse received a breakout pass from Lexi Romanchuk and skated into the Vermont zone before beating Litchfield with a quick wrist shot. It was the second time in as many games that Sansone had a multiple goal game.

With 40 seconds left in regulation Providence ended any thoughts of a Vermont comeback as Brooke Boquist scored her fourth goal of the season into the empty net.

"Providence earned this win today," said head coach Jim Plumer. "We had opportunities to gain momentum in the first period with three power plays and didn't seize the chances. We've got to compete better in all three zones tomorrow."

The Catamounts close out their season series with Providence tomorrow afternoon with faceoff set for 4 p.m. Fans with a men's hockey ticket from tonight's game against UConn will receive free admission to Saturday's game.
