PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team came back from a 4-2 third period deficit to win 5-4 to capture their first win of the 2015-16 season on Saturday, Nov. 7. The Friars improved to 1-7-0 (1-3-0 WHEA) and the Wildcats moved to 1-9-0 (1-5-0 WHEA).
Freshman Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) started in net for the Friars and claimed her first collegiate victory.
New Hampshire jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, both goals coming from Amy Boucher.
With two minutes remaining in the period the Friars went on the power play. New Hampshire had a two person breakaway opportunity that Myers batted away and transitioned the puck back into the Friar offensive zone. With 1:20 remaining in the period, Lexi Romanchuck (San Jose, Calif.) found Christina Putigna (Grimsby, Ont.) alone in the slot. Putigna shot the puck past New Hampshire's Vilma Vatttovaara and notched her first collegiate goal on the power-play.
Just over a minute later, Putigna fed a breaking Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ont.) for a second Friar goal. The Friars ended the first period with a 2-2 tied score.
Myers made 12 saves in the second period, but the Wildcats were able to find the back of the net twice.
Providence started the second period down 4-2. With just over eleven minutes remaining in regulation, Boquist added her second goal of the day. Just as the Friar power play expired, Blair Parent (Anoka, Minn.) fed a wide open Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Maintoba) across the offensive zone. Boquist crashed the net and buried the rebound past Vattovaara.
With under two minutes to play, Providence pulled Myers for the extra attacker. Carels fed Putigna from behind the net. Putigna worked with the puck just below the hash marks along the boards and slipped a seam pass to Madison Sansone (Lockport, N.Y.). Sansone found the back of the net and tied the game at 4 goals apiece.
With 40 seconds left Kate Friesen (Altona, Manitoba) broke out the puck to Parent on the half wall in the Friars defensive zone. Parent found a rushing Sansone, who then carried the puck into the Wildcat zone and dangled two New Hampshire defensemen. Sansone shot the puck through Vattovaara's five hole and put the Friars ahead 5-4.
The Friars are back in action at 2:00 p.m. on November 13 at the University of Vermont.
