TROY, N.Y. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team tied Rensselaer, 3-3, in a non-conference match-up at the Houston Field House on Tuesday afternoon. After trailing 3-1 in the third, the Friars scored two goals to force the extra period. With the tie Providence now stands at 3-14-4 while RPI moves to 4-13-3.
RPI struck first, 1:30 into the first period to take a quick lead. Shayna Tomlinson scored with Jenn Godin and Lauren Wash gathering the assists. The Engineers ended the period with another goal to give them a 2-0 lead going into the intermission. Mariana Walsh tallied the goal with the helper going to Kathryn Schilter. Shots were close in the period with Providence edging RPI, 9-8.
Providence narrowed RPI's lead (2-1) when senior Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) scored at 4:41 into the second period. Freshman Madison Sansone (Lockport, N.Y.) earned the assist along with senior Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.). Simpson forced a turnover in the defensive zone and passed it ahead to Sansone, who then gave it off to Hanrahan at the blue line. Hanrahan drove to the net and beat Brianna Piper close range for her team-best ninth goal of the season. The Friars controlled the puck for most of the period, firing off 12 shots compared to the Engineers' four.
The Engineers scored a short-handed goal to open the third period to take a 3-1 lead (1:23). Ali Svoboda picked off a pass from junior Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.) and fired it right back for the unassisted goal.
Sansone got the Friar offense going again when she scored her first collegiate goal at 8:19. She was assisted by Hanrahan and senior Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.). Hanrahan fed Sansone in front of the net where she pulled Providence to within one of RPI (3-2).
Providence had a chance to even the score when freshman Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ontario) had a good look with a slap shot just past the point at 8:56 but her shot glanced off the pipe. Boquist had another chance with 6:35 remaining in the game when she was in front of the net but Piper was able to come away with the save.
The equalizer came when Hanrahan scored her second goal of the game when she beat Piper upper left from the far faceoff circle at 15:07. Sophomore Arianna Reid (Lakeville, Minn.) picked up the assist when she forced the turnover and passed the puck ahead.
Hanrahan had a chance for a hat trick with 1:37 left in overtime but Piper made the save. Bryant recorded three key saves under the two minute mark to keep the game tied.
For the game Bryant made 16 saves while Piper stopped 27 shots.
The Friars will next play a home-and-home series against Hockey East foe New Hampshire on Saturday, Jan. 10 and Sunday, Jan.11. Saturday's game will be played at Schneider Arena at 1:00 p.m. while Sunday's game will be at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. for a 2:00 p.m. puck drop.
