PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Northeastern women's hockey team nearly erased a three-goal deficit in the third period, but ran out of time in a 3-2 setback at Robert Morris on Friday night at 84 Lumber Arena.

Freshman Denisa Krizova scored her first collegiate goal and added an assist, while junior Kendall Coyne posted a season-high 17 shots on goal and chipped in her third assist of the year. Northeastern (1-2-2) outshot Robert Morris, 41-24, including a 20-7 edge in a frantic third period.

The Colonials (3-6-0) broke open a scoreless game with two goals in a 55-second span late in the second period. On an RMU power play, Ashley Vesci skated to the right of the net and snuck a shot inside the near post on senior goaltender Chloe Desjardins (21 saves) to make it 1-0 at the 14:33 mark.

Less than a minute later, RMU went back on the attack and doubled the lead when Maeve Garvey wristed a shot off the crossbar and in from the top of the left circle.

The Colonials tacked on a third just 2:07 into the third period when Vesci took a feed from Garvey and fired a shot over the shoulder of Desjardins from the left wing.

Facing its largest deficit of the season, Northeastern battled right back to make it a two-goal game again just over two minutes later. After some hard work in the corner, Krizova was able to slip a feed to freshman Lauren Kelly at the left face-off dot. Kelly quickly released a rising shot that clipped the iron and found the back of the net at the 4:20 mark of the third. It was Kelly's third goal in as many games after scoring in both contests at Mercyhurst last weekend.

The Huskies kept their foot on the pedal and further cut into the deficit on Krizova's debut goal with 5:46 to play. Coyne picked up the primary assist after a tricky wrap-around attempt was initially kept out by RMU goaltender Jessica Dodds. Krizova followed the miss and chipped the rebound over Dodds' outstretched pad to make it 3-2.

Northeastern tried frantically to tie the game in the final minutes, but could not find an equalizer despite long spells in the Colonials' zone.

The teams will square off again tomorrow at 3:05 p.m.
