ERIE, Pa. - The Providence College women's hockey team was defeated by #9/9 Mercyhurst, 3-0, in its first regular season game on Friday, Oct. 3. Mercyhurst used three third period goals to power them to the victory and 1-0 on the season. Providence begins the season at 0-1.
The scoreless first period was back-and-forth battle for both sides. The teams split shots, 7-7. All seven Friar shots came from different players.
In the second period, Providence had a chance on the penalty kill (1:53) when junior Brittney Thunstrom (Coon Rapids, Minn) released a shot that was saved by Mercyhurst goalie, Amanda Makela. Next, the Friars had their chance on the power play. Junior Lexi Romanchuk's (San Jose, Calif.) blasted a shot that rang the post. The Friars then had a five-on-three advantage 4:57 into the period, but came up empty as the score remained 0-0. Providence closed out the period on another power play. Sophomore Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) had a good opportunity to score on a low shot but Makela came up with a kick save to keep the game scoreless.
The Lakers got on the board at 8:56 in the third to take a 1-0 lead when Jenna Dingeldein found the back of net close range. Emily Janiga recorded the assist. Carels later had a shot off the goalies glove that almost trickled in, but was saved by Laker defender, Janiga. Mercyhurst quickly countered when Brooke Hartwick scored a goal (11:50) from Sarah Robello. With Friar netminder Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) pulled, the Lakers scored again to go ahead 3-0 (18:07). Janiga scored the third goal with Dingeldein and Lauren Kilroy tallying an assist.
Morse recorded 27 saves in net for Providence while Makela stopped 15 shots for Mercyhurst.
The Friars finish the Mercyhurst series tomorrow (Oct. 4) when they square off at 5:00 p.m.
