ORONO, Maine-The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey team opened its season with a 2-1 win over New Hampshire at Alfond Arena Saturday afternoon. Maine improves to 1-0-0 on the season, while UNH falls to 0-1-0.

UNH took an early 1-0 lead at 3:39 in the opening period. Haley Breedlove had a shot that Meghann Treacy (Lake Peekskill, New York) saved, but the rebound went right to Margo Lund. Lund fired the puck past Treacy for the 1-0 lead.

Maine answered back at 11:27 when Hailey Browne (Oakville, Ontario) fired the puck passed Vilma Vaattovaara from just outside the face-off circle. Brooke Stacey (Kahnawake, Quebec) picked up her first career assist on the goal.

Maine scored what proved to be the game winner at 14:06 in the second period when Kelsey MacSorley(Stratford, Ontario) had an un-assisted goal for the Black Bears.

Neither team scored in the third period despite 17 combined shots. Maine outshot New Hampshire 37 to 26 in the game. The Black Bears were scoreless on their lone power play of the game. New Hampshire was 0-2 on the power play. Maine goalie, Meghann Treacy, made 25 saves in route to her first victory of the season. New Hampshire goal, Vilma Vaattovaara, made 35 saves in a losing effort.

Maine returns to action when it hosts Robert Morris on Friday October 3rd at Alfond Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
