PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team fell 2-0 in a Hockey East loss to the University of Maine Black Bears on Sunday, Jan. 18 at Schneider Arena. The Friars record drops to 5-15-4 and 4-7-1 in Hockey East while Maine improves to 8-11-3 and 7-4-1 in conference play.

After a scoreless first period, the Black Bears struck first at 8:34 of the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Hailey Browne netted the goal, which would hold as the game winner, with Emilie Brigham and Brooklyn Langlois each assisting on the play.

The Friars effort to even the score in the final minutes of regulation play with an extra attacker was negated by an empty net goal scored by Maine defenseman Kelsey MacSorley at to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead. MacSorley's goal was unassisted.

Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) played a strong game for the Friars as she only allowed one goal in the appearance. The junior goaltender stopped 27 shots.

Despite facing 30 shots by the Friars in the game, Maine goaltender Meghann Treacy stopped every shot she faced earning a shutout to lead her team to the win.

The Friars outshot Maine, 30-29, including 12-8 in the third period.

Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill as Providence went 1-for-1 while Maine was 3-for-3.

The Friars continue Hockey East play next weekend with a home-and-home series against UConn. The opening game of the series will be played at Schneider Arena at 1:00p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24. The two teams will complete the series at UConn on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 2:00p.m.
