STORRS, Conn. - Three Huskies lit the lamp and Elaine Chuli made 32 saves in a 3-1 victory for the UConn women's hockey team over Yale on Saturday afternoon at Freitas Ice Forum. The contest was the 2014 Nutmeg Classic Consolation Game and moves the Huskies to 4-10-5 on the year, while Yale goes to 4-6-1.
After Yale took an early lead, Kelly Harris (Canton, Mich.) got the Huskies on the board in the first period before Madison Badeau (Courtice, Ontario) scored her first career goal to put UConn ahead in the second. Emily Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.) provided a shorthanded empty-netter to ice the contest in the final moments, preserving the win for Chuli (Waterford, Ontario). The UConn netminder was terrific for the second-straight contest in the Nutmeg Classic, turning aside 32-of-33 shots a day after stopping 51 against No. 5 Clarkson.
Yale scored on one of its three power play attempts, while UConn did not have a man-advantage chance. The Bulldogs out-shot the Huskies 33-21 overall, while the Huskies won 30-of-53 faceoffs led by a 12-for-17 performance in the dot from Snodgrass. Hanna Mandl made 18 saves for Yale in goal.
The Huskies had a golden opportunity two minutes into the contest, when Harris sent a pass from behind the net central to Brittany Berisoff (Kelowna, British Columbia) for a one-timer that whistled off the post. Yale went on the power play at 9:06 of the first period, and capitalized with a power play goal 12 seconds into the advantage. Eden Murray and Taylor Marchin cycled the puck to Phoebe Staenz at the right circle, who one-timed a blast past Chuli to make it 1-0.
The Huskies responded less than two minutes later, leveling the contest at 11:09 of the opening stanza. Leah Lum (Richmond, British Columbia) and Rebecca Fleming (Newton, Mass.) worked the puck in front, where Harris was waiting and punched home her fourth tally of the year to tie the contest at 1-1. That score held to the first intermission, with Chuli turning aside 12 shots in the first.
UConn took the lead at 7:04 of the second with Badeau's first career goal. After a turnover near the Yale blue line, the freshman ghosted in alone and snapped a tough-angle shot from the bottom of right circle past Mandl to give Connecticut a 2-1 lead.
Harris nearly picked up her second of the day about nine minutes into the third period, collecting a loose puck on the doorstep and firing a shot that was stopped by Mandl's left pad. With under five to play, Yale had a pair of chances thwarted by two blocked shots from Caitlin Hewes (Stillwater, Minn.) and another from Berisoff before Stanez rocketed an open look over the cage.
Yale pulled Mandl and called timeout with 2:19 remaining in the third, and after UConn cleared a threat and iced the puck the Huskies used their stoppage a minute later. A penalty on the Huskies gave Yale a 6-on-4 opportunity for the final 32 seconds of regulation, before Snodgrass sealed with an ice-length empty-netter with six ticks remaining off a Hewes assist.
The Huskies are off for the month of December for finals and winter break before returning to the ice for a Hockey East game at Northeastern on Jan. 3, 2015.
