STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's hockey team dropped a tightly contested match-up against New Hampshire, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Freitas Ice Forum. The setback drops the Huskies to 6-13-6 on the year and 2-7-3 in Hockey East play, while the Wildcats improve to 6-16-1 and 4-9-0 in league action.

After falling behind 1-0 after a period, UConn got a power play goal from Emily Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.) at the tail end of the second period to pull even. The contest remained tied until midway through the third when UNH pulled ahead, before the Wildcats iced the contest with a late empty-netter.

New Hampshire held a 42-29 edge in shots on goal for the contest, but only a 28-25 advantage after the first period. Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec) made 39 saves for the Huskies, while Vilma Vaattovaara stopped 28 shots for the Wildcats. UConn went 1-for-3 on the power play and held New Hampshire scoreless on two man-advantage attempts.

After a quiet start to the first period, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead when Amy Boucher intercepted a pass in the UConn end and waked in alone to snap off a goal at 15:50. New Hampshire out-shot Connecticut 14-4 in the opening stanza.

The Huskies upped their pressure early in the second frame, and had a series of strong looks that Vaattovaara denied around the eight-minute mark. After going on a power play with 11.1 seconds left in the period, the Huskies found an equalizing goal. Kayla Campero (Wallingford, Conn.) controlled the puck in the slot and chopped it towards goal, where Sarah MacDonnell (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) crashed and sent a backhand across the crease. Snodgrass gathered the pass far post and jammed home her team-high 13th goal of the year, fifth on the power play, with 0.1 seconds left in the second.

UConn went to the power play at 5:39 of the third but could not convert with the man advantage. At 9:05, New Hampshire struck to take a 2-1 lead with a Hannah Armstrong goal. A penalty gave the Huskies a power play at 16:56, and Chris MacKenzie used his timeout to pull Belanger and give the Huskies a 6-on-4 advantage. Moments after the power play ended, Nicole Jensen sealed the contest for the Wildcats with an empty-netter.

Up next, the Huskies continue their late-season conference push with a home-and-home series against Providence. UConn and PC will skate in Providence on Saturday, Jan. 24 before a contest in Storrs on Sunday, Jan. 25.
