PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team tied UConn, 4-4, on Sunday afternoon at Schneider Arena. Senior Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) netted a career-high two goals for the Friars, including the game-tying goal.
UConn (3-5-5, 0-1-2 HE) started the scoring at the end of the first period (19:26) when Theresa Knutson scored from Cydnee Cook and Sarah MacDonnell to make the game 1-0, in favor of the Huskies.
Providence retaliated quickly, 00:57 into the second period, when freshman Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ontario) scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game (1-1). Sophomore Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) set Boquist up on a nice feed in front of the net. Sophomore Liv Halvorson (Richfield, Minn.) also assisted on the play. Simpson and graduate student Stephanie DeMars (Vermontville, N.Y.) netted goals at 9:22 and 10:47, respectively, to give the Friars a 3-1 advantage to close out the period. Seniors Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) and Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) gathered the assist on Simpson's goal while Harahan again assisted on DeMars' goal with senior Victoria Virtue (Walpole, Mass.).
The Huskies started their comeback 16 seconds into the third when Emily Snodgrass scored off of a turnover to inch closer to the Friars (3-2). The equalizer came two minutes later (2:33) when Margaret Zimmer scored on a pass from Cook to tie the game at three. UConn scored again to take a 4-3 lead when Leah Lum scored with a feed from Lindsay Roethke. With the clock winding down, and Providence junior goalie Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.) pulled, Simpson connected for a goal with four seconds left (19:56) on a feed from Carels. Hanrahan also registered an assist on the goal.
Overtime ended scoreless as the game remained tied at 4-4. Providence generated two shots in the extra period while UConn only had one.
Bryant ended the game with 24 saves for the Friars while Elaine Chuli tallied 27 saves for the Huskies.
Hanrahan finished the game with a career-high three assists. Carels tied her career-high of two assists.
The Friars return to action Saturday, Nov. 15 when they host the first game of a home-and-home series against Northeastern. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
