PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team recorded a 4-1 victory over the University of Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Schneider Arena. With the Hockey East win, the Friars improve to 6-15-4 overall and 5-7-1 in conference play. The Huskies fall to 6-14-6 overall and 2-8-3 in the Hockey East.

UConn got on the board first when Rebecca Fleming capitalized on a cross ice pass from Theresa Knutson to take a 1-0 lead at 2:09 of the opening period.

Senior Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) evened the game at 6:52 of the first with her third goal of the season. The play leading up to the goal began when sophomore Liv Halvorson (Richfield, Minn.) skated through the neutral zone with the puck and into the offensive zone before dropping off a pass for Micheletti. Micheletti fired a shot that went high over UConn goaltender Elaine Chuli to tie the game at 1.

While on the power play, Providence took the lead at 12:11 of the first period. Playing the point, senior Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) started the play when she sent a pass to senior Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.). Hanrahan skated in from the face-off circle before she got off a shot that made its way towards the UConn net. Senior Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) finished off the play from just outside the Huskies goal when she netted the loose puck for a 2-1 Friars advantage.

The Friars offense contributed another two goals in the second period as Providence held a 4-1 lead over UConn at the conclusion of the first forty minutes of play. Frade put the Friars ahead 3-1 at 11:03 of the second period when she took a shot from the slot that deflected off a UConn player and eluded Chuli. Frade's fifth goal of the season was assisted by sophomore Arianna Reid (Lakeville, Minn.) and freshman Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ontario).

Micheletti's second goal of the game gave the Friars a 4-1 lead at 11:57 of the second period. Behind the net, Hanrahan and Simpson worked together along the boards to win a puck battle and Simpson was able to set-up Micheletti. Micheletti was wide open to take the shot, scoring her fourth goal of the season.

The 4-1 score held through the third period as the Friars defense, led by goaltender Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.), stopped the Huskies offense.

Morse played an impressive game in goal for the Friars stopping 29 of the 30 shots on goal by the Huskies to record her sixth win of the season.

The Friars outshot the Huskies by a margin of 39-30, including 16-6 in the first period.

UConn goaltender Elaine Chuli made 24 saves through the first two periods of play while Annie Belanger stopped all 11 shots by the Friars in the third period.

Providence's special teams also factored into the game as Simpson's game winner was scored on the power-play in addition to the Friars killing off all six penalties they took in the game.

The Friars and the Huskies will play the second half of the weekend series tomorrow Sunday, Jan. 25 at 2:00p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
