ORONO, Maine --- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team lost to the University of Connecticut 6-2 at Alfond Arena Sunday afternoon. Maine falls to 10-18-3 on the season, while Connecticut improves to 8-18-8.

Sarah MacDonnell started the scoring for the Huskies at (10:04) in the first period with a power play goal. Leah Lum and Caitlin Hewes worked the puck between each other until Hewes found an open MacDonnell. Hewes quickly fed MacDonnell the puck who found the back of the net.

Caitlin Hewes added another power play goal in the first at (12:02). Leah Lum had her original shot saved by Mariah Fujimagari (Markham, Ontario). Hewes picked up the loose puck and extended the UConn lead to 2-0. Emily Snodgrass was also credited with an assist.

Theresa Knutson ended the frame with an unassisted goal at (13:11). Knutson stole the puck from the Black Bear defense behind the net, used a few slick stick moves, and wristed the puck home.

The Huskies struck first in the second period at (8:31) with a goal from Emily Snodgrass. Caitlin Hewes set up the scoring play for Snodgrass.

Maine finally found the back of the net at (12:36) with a power play goal from Emilie Brigham (Anoka, Minnesota). Brittney Huneke (Hastings, Minnesota) slapped a shot off the Huskie netminder that trickled away. Brigham poked the loose puck past Chuli for the first Black Bear goal of the day. Audra Richards (Maplewood, Minnesota) also had an assist on the play.

Connecticut ended the second period with a power play goal from Rebecca Fleming at (19:12). Cydnee Cook and Leah Lum were responsible for setting up the power play goal.

Maine added their second goal at (14:47) in the third period with a goal from Jillian Lantry to make the score 5-2. Audra Richards had her shot saved by Chuli, but the puck sat uncovered in the crease. Langtry dove to push the puck over the line. Brittney Huneke had her second assist of the day on the Langtry goal.

Jessica Stott ended the game with a goal at (18:19) for the Huskies. Justine Fredette had the only assist.

Mariah Fujimagari saved 13 of 18 shots on goal, and, after the substitution, Natalie Robinson (Huntsville, Ontario) saved 8 of 9 shots on goal. Elaine Chuli saved 22 of 24 shots on goal. The Black Bears were 1-3 on the power play, while the Huskies scored three goals on five power play opportunities.

The Black Bears return to action February 27th at the Alfond Arena against the University of Connecticut for the Hockey East semi-final series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
