HAMILTON, N.Y. - Emily Snodgrass scored her second goal of the contest with five seconds to play in regulation and the UConn women's hockey team notched a 2-1 win at Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink. The win moves the Huskies to 2-3-1 on the season, while the Raiders drop to 1-3.
The two goals for Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.) were her second and third tallies of the year, with the senior forward giving UConn a lead in the first period before the dramatic third period strike. Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ontario) was terrific in goal for the Huskies, stopping 25-of-26 shots improve her record to 2-2-1 this season.
Chuli's counterpart, Ashlynne Rando, made 23 saves for the Raiders. Colgate held a slim 26-25 edge in shots on goal in the evenly matched contest, also edging UConn 36-25 in the faceoff circle. The Huskies' special teams came up clutch throughout the contest, going 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. UConn also blocked 23 shots, compared to nine for Colgate.
After UConn killed a pair of Colgate power plays early, the Huskies struck for the game's first goal. Taking a feed from Rachel Farrel (Cheshire, Conn.), Snodgrass punched home her second of the season at the 12:12 mark of the first stanza to put the Huskies up 1-0.
The Huskies killed off a third Raider power play in the final minutes of the first period, and took their 1-0 lead to the first intermission thanks in part to 12 opening period saves from Chuli. After combining to total 26 shots on goal in the first period, the two sides mustered only six apiece in the second frame and UConn kept its one-goal lead heading to the third.
UConn took to the power play early in the third period, but Rando stopped three shots on target during the advantage to thwart the Huskies. Barely a minute after the kill, Colgate equalized with a Melissa Kueber goal at 4:23 off an assist from Katie Case to pull even at 1-1.
The Huskies killed off the fifth Raider power play of the day midway through the third period, and neither team could find a winner until the waning seconds of regulation. With the contest seemingly bound for overtime, Snodgrass got a feed from Kayla Campero (Wallingford, Conn.) and potted her second of the afternoon at 19:55 of the third period, beating the buzzer to spark UConn to the win.
Up next, the Huskies continue their New York trip when they head to Syracuse tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop with the Orange is set for 4 p.m.
