ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team exploded for three goals in less than seven minutes late in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and defeated #6 Boston University 4-2 on Saturday afternoon to split the weekend series. Maine improves to 3-5-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in Hockey East play, while Boston University falls to 4-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 in conference action.

The Terriers opened the scoring 3:55 into the opening frame when Rebecca Leslie found Rebecca Russo and she fired the puck past Maine netminder Meghann Treacy (Lake Peekskill, New York). Boston University held the 1-0 lead until the second period.

On the power play, Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) found Kelsey MacSorley (Stratford, Ontario) just inside the blueline. She ripped a shot that beat BU goalie Erin O'Neil. Morgan Sakundiak (Calgary, Alberta) also assisted on the goal which tied the game.

The game remained tied until midway through the third period. Sakundiak and Emilie Brigham (Anoka, Minnesota) carried the puck carried the puck up the ice, passing back and fourth, on an odd-man rush. Brigham fired a shot that beat O'Neil. Audra Richards (Maplewood, Minnesota) then extended Maine's lead to 3-1 less than a minute later when she beat O'Neil from Hailey Browne (Oakville, Ontario) and Brittney Huneke (Hastings, Minnesota).

The Terriers were awarded a power play with 3:18 to play and pulled their goalie in favor of the extra attacker. Treacy stood her crease and and let nothing past her during the power play.

Richards scored her second goal of the period, an empty-net tally at 19:03, as Maine increased its lead to 4-1. Brooke Stacey (Kahnawake, Quebec) and Sakundiak each assisted on the goal.

The Terriers added a goal at 19:58 by Sarah Bayersdorfer to make it a 4-2 final.

Boston University outshot Maine 43-30 in the game. Maine finished the game 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Terriers were scoreless in three chances.

Treacy was outstanding in net for the Black Bears, stopping 41 of the 43 shots that she faced. He improves to 3-5-0 on the season. Erin O'Neil made 26 saves for Boston University and falls to 1-2-0.

Maine returns to action on Friday, Oct. 31 when they travel to Connecticut for a 7 PM game with the Huskies. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM.
