MAINE SHUT OUT BY MERCYHURST, 5-0

ERIE, Pa.- The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey Team fell to eighth ranked Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers improve to a 5-3-1 record and Maine falls to 0-5-1.

Maine and Mercyhurst battled for the first goal of the game but the first period ended 0-0. Maine was out shot 14-9.

Mercyhurst had the first goal in the second period when sophomore Jenna Dingeldein scored her first goal of the season at 6:28 on a pass from freshman Christie Cicero. The second period ended with the Lakers having a 1-0 lead.

Maine goalie Meghann Treacy (Lake Peeksville, N.Y.) made 26 saves in the second period.

Mercyhurst came out hot in the third period scoring 4 goals. The first being sophomore Maggie Rothgery scored her third goal of the season assisted by senior Christine Bestland and senior Kaleigh Chippy at 2:59.

Laker Kaleigh Chippy got a goal of her own minutes later on a pass from Maggie Rothgery at 9:02 in the third.

Mercyhurst continued their streak with another goal when sophomore Kathy Donohue put one by Maine goalie Meghann Treacy for her first goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Jaclyn Arbour at 11:08.

Sophomore Emily Janiga put the puck in the back of the net for the Lakers at 15:52 scoring her sixth goal of the season on a pass from Christine Bestland. Leaving the final score Mercyhurst 5 Maine 1.

The Black Bears were out shot 60-23 by the Lakers.

Maine goalie Meghann Treacy made a career high of 55 saves while Mercyhurst goalie Amanda Makela made 23 saves.

The Black Bears return home Friday November 1st to take on Northeastern at 7pm.
