Senior Kayla Kaluzny had an assist for the Black Bears

ERIE Pa. - The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey Team fell to the eighth ranked Mercyhurst Lakers 2-1 on Friday night. Freshman Black Bear Jessica Vallotton scored her first goal of the season. Mercyhurst improves their record to 4-3-1 and Maine falls to 0-4-1.

Mercyhurst struck early to take a 1-0 lead in the first period when sophomore Emily Janiga scored on a pass from senior Christine Bestland at 2:38. Maine was outshot 10-15 in the first.

Maine puts the puck in the net early in the second period when freshman Jessica Vallotton (Glenboro, Manitoba) scored on a power play goal assisted by freshman Emilie Brigham (Anoka, MN) and senior Kayla Kaluzny (Calgary, Alberta) at 3:58.

Mercyhurst takes the lead again in the third after senior Christine Bestland scores her fifth goal of the season on a pass from senior Christie Cicero at 15:20.

Maine pulls goalie Meghann Treacy (Lake Peeksville, N.Y.) at 19:45 hoping to tie the game. The Black Bears come up short leaving the final score 2-1.

The Black Bears were out shot by the Lakers 43-24.

Maine goalie Meghann Treacy made 41 saves in 59:37, while Mercyhurst goalie Amanda Makela made 23 saves in 60:00.

The Black Bears return home next Friday Nov. 1st to take on Northeastern at 7pm.
