CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Taylor Wasylk scored a first period goal that proved to be the game winner and co-captain Corinne Boyles stopped 25 shots in her third shutout of the season to lead No. 7 Boston College to a 3-0 victory over Northeastern in the Beanpot championship game at Kelley Rink on Tuesday night.
A late first-period goal by Wasylk and two power-play goals in the third period by Meagan Mangene and Melissa Bizzari provided the offence the Eagles needed to win their fifth Beanpot title.
Wasylk gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 16:02 of the first period with her 10th goal of the season. The senior forward intercepted a pass by Northeastern's Maggie Brennolt in the Husky's zone and ripped a wrist shot from the inside edge of the right faceoff circle that caught a piece of NU goaltender Chloe Desjardins' shoulder and fluttered into the top left corner of the net.
Northeastern nearly tied the score at 15:20 of the middle stanza when Hayley Scamurra fired a shot on net from the right faceoff dot, but the punk rang the left post and flew wide of the net.
Kelly Wallace had two great opportunities for the Huskies early in the third period, but both her backhanded shot and swing-around shot in front of the crease went just wide of an open net as Boyles was caught out of position.
Boston College doubled the score at 10:23 of the third stanza when Mangene netted her third goal of the year on the power play. Andie Anastos won a faceoff in the offensive zone to Emily Field along the right boards who found Mangene at the top of the slot for a slap shot that went over Desjardin's shoulders and lifted the water bottle off the top of the net, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Bizzari concluded the scoring at 15:15 of the third period with a power play goal of her own. Pfalzer sent a pass from the blue line to Anastos at the top of the left faceoff circle who fed Bizzari on the goal line for a tough-angle shot that slid between Desjardin's legs and into the net to settle the score at 3-0.
Boyles stopped 25 shots and improves to 18-5-2. Desjardins made 27 saves and falls to 14-2-2.
BC was 2-for-4 on the power play while NU went 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
Final shots were 30-25 in favor of Boston College.
The Eagles will return to action this weekend when they travel to Maine for a two-game series on Feb. 22-23.
Notes: Taylor Wasylk was named the MVP of the tournament with two goals and an assist, including a short-handed goal in the first round and the game-winning goal in the championship game... Corinne Boyles was named winner of the Joe Bertagna Goalie Award after making 49 of 50 saves in two games (0.98 save percentage)... Boston College has won the last three Beanpot tournaments it has hosted.
