Junior forward Brianne Kilgour had two goals and an assist for the Black Bears

Orono, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team skated to a 3-2 victory over Connecticut this afternoon at Alfond Arena. With the win, the Black Bears improve to 1-3-0 (1-1-0) while the Huskies fall to 1-5-1 (1-1-0) on the short season.

After the win Coach Lewis stated, "UConn has always been a tough opponent to play against and we'll build on the split and gain confidence going into a toughest weekend yet versus (Boston University) and (Northeastern).

Connecticut got on the board first with a Caitlin Hewes power play goal at 11:45, with an assist going to Michela Cava, and Casey Knajdek.

The Black Bears would go on to score three unanswered goals in the remaining minutes of the first period. Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton, Ontario) scored her first goal of the 2012-13 campaign as she found the back of the net at 14:26 off the Katy Massey (Waterville, Maine) assist. Kilgour wasted little time as she gave the Black Bears a 2-1 lead at 18:15 when she cleaned up the rebound off a Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Michigan) shot, Dougherty picked up the assist on the goal.

Kilgour sent the puck to Dougherty as she added to the Maine lead at 19:44, beating the Connecticut goalie for a 3-1 lead.

The second period went scoreless as the Black Bears held a 12-3 shots advantage over the Huskies.

The Huskies pulled their goalie late in the period to gain an extra skater, which paid off, as Cava scored at 18:55 after Kelly Horan and Hewes passed the puck around the top of their offensive zone.

Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Michigan) saw action for the first time this year as she anchored the Black Bears between the pipes. Ott saw her record improve to 1-0-0 as she notched 25 saves with two goals against.

Sarah Moses posted 34 saves with three goals against as her record fell to 1-2-0.

The Black Bears held a 37-27 shot advantage over the Huskies.

The Black Bears return to action when they travel to Boston to faceoff against Boston University on October 26 at 7:00 PM and Northeastern on October 27 at 2:00 PM. Maine returns home on November 2 and 3 for a two-day home series against Providence, puck is scheduled to drop at 2:00 PM for both games.
