PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Women's Ice Hockey team recorded a 4-3 loss against No. 3 Boston College in a Hockey East match-up on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Schneider Arena. The Friars (11-11-4, 5-6-2 HE) hosted the Eagles (18-4-2, 11-2-1 HE) in the team's annual Hockey East Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer game.
Providence jumped to an early lead at 1:49 of the first period when junior Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) recorded her ninth goal of the season for the Friars. Sophomore Victoria Virtue's (Walpole, Mass.) pass connected with Buie, who fired a wrist shot that beat Boston College goaltender Megan Miller low.
Boston College got on the board to even the score at one when Emily Field got the puck past the Friars freshman netminder Sarah Bryant (Bethlehem, Pa.) after a sequence of shots in front of the Providence goal at 11:06 of the first period. Only 29 seconds later, the Eagles took the lead for the first time of the game when Ashley Motherwell capitalized on a breakaway.
The Eagles extended their lead at 3:08 of the second period when Emily Pfalzer scored for Boston College finishing up a play that started with an odd man rush up the ice. Providence had a chance to cut the Eagles lead in half during a 5-on-3 power-play but could convert on two man advantage.
Later in the second period, Buie tallied her second goal of the game. Buie's goal was scored after a scrum in front of the net with sophomore Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) and sophomore Brooke Simpson (Boxboro, Mass.), both of whom recorded assists on the play. Simpson leads the team with 13 assists on the season.
Simpson tied the game for the Friars with her third goal of the season at 11:55 of the third period. Senior Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) tipped the puck to Simpson, notching her team-leading 24th point of the season. Simpson beat Miller high with a shot from right outside of the crease to even the score at 3.
Boston College scored the game-winning goal after a scramble in front of the Providence goal crease when Melissa Bizzari collected a rebound and put the puck past Bryant at 16:39 of the third period.
Bryant finished the game with 21 saves in the loss and Miller stopped 25 shots from the Friars. Providence outshot the Eagles, 28-25 in the game, including 15-8 in the third period.
The Friars will play Hockey East opponent Maine tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena. There will be live streaming as well as a live broadcast of tomorrow's game that can be accessed on friars.com.
