PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team fell to visiting Robert Morris, 3-2, Friday at Schneider Arena. It was the Friars third straight defeat, even though they outshot the visitors, 45-21.
The eventual game-winner was scored late in regulation. RMU broke a 2-2 tie at 17:34 of the third period, as freshman Rebecca Vint hammered home a rebound from in front of the net.
It was the hosts who controlled play early and grabbed the initial lead. Senior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) converted 13:04 into the first period for the lone, first-period goal. Cottrell, who was sent away on a partial break-away by teammate Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.), brought the puck to the front of the net and slid it home between the goalie's pads for her ninth of the year and fifth point in as many games.
The Colonials knotted the game in the second period courtesy a penalty shot. At 10:10, Friar defenseman Christie Jensen (Delta, B.C.) was whistled for interference as RMU's Thea Imbrogno skated in on the goaltender from the right wing side. Imbrogno was awarded the penalty shot and connected, faking a forehand, carrying the puck to the left of the cage and finishing with a forehand. It was the second penalty shot taken against PC this season. Vermont's Meghan Huertas was stopped by senior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) on October 21.
The visitors took a 2-1 advantage at the 5:14 mark of the third. Junior Cobina Delaney redirected a Kelsey Thomas pass as both attacked on a 2-on-1 break-in.
Providence answered at 14:01. Freshman Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) accepted a strange bounce off the end boards and lifted the puck top-shelf for her sixth of the season.
Friar netminder Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.) halted 18 shots on the evening. Colonial Kristen DiCiocco stopped 43.
The same teams will meet again tomorrow, January 7, at Schneider Arena with the puck dropping at 1 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GO PC or by visiting Friars.com.
