Junior forward Casey Pickett had two goals and an assist for the Huskies

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Burlington native Maggie DiMasi had two goals and Florence Schelling made 36 saves as No. 8 Northeastern defeated Vermont 5-1 Saturday afternoon in Hockey East action at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

DiMasi opened the scoring 6:01 into the first period. On a three-on-two DiMasi received a pass from Dani Rylan, as the trailer on the play, and snapped a quick shot past Vermont goaltender Kelci Lanthier for her second goal of the season.

Claire Santostefano added to the Huskies lead 4:50 into the second frame. On an odd man rush off a Vermont turnover Santosefano and Katie MacSorley worked down low on a two-on-one. Santostefano tapped in a cross crease pass for her first of the season.

The Huskies pushed their lead to three early in the third period. Lucie Povova found Dimasi alone in the slot and she one-timed a shot top corner past Lanthier at the 2:29 mark.

The Catamounts answered back 34 seconds later. On the forecheck Emily Walsh stripped a Northeastern defender and walked in alone on Schelling. Walsh beat Schelling with a low wrist shot blocker side to bring Vermont within two.

Vermont had plenty of chances in third period but they could not put another past Schelling. She made 36 saves in the game, including 27 saves in the final two periods.

Junior forward Casey Pickett added two insurance goals late in the third period to push the Huskies advantage to four. Pickett leads the team in scoring with nine goals this season.

The win moves Northeastern to 10-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in Hockey East play. The loss drops Vermont to 2-6-4 and 2-3-0 in league play.

Vermont returns to action Saturday (2 p.m.) when they travel to face Providence in Hockey East action.
