PROVIDENCE COLLEGE EDGED BY BROWN, 2-1, IN MAYOR'S CUP

Senior forward Abby Gauthier scored a goal for the Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by Brown, 2-1, in the 17th annual Mayor's Cup contest Friday at Schneider Arena.

Providence outshot the Bears, 41-15, but had difficulty solving goaltender Aubree Moore. The sophomore recorded 40 saves.

Brown captured an early lead, courtesy a pair of goals midway through the opening period. At 12:37, Bear freshman forward Janice Yang converted on a rush for her first collegiate score. Less than two minutes later, at 14:31, classmate Brittany Moorehead shot from a sharp angle to the left of the cage, sneaking the puck home. 2-0 Bears after one.

The teams played a scoreless middle period, despite the Friars peppering the Bear goal with several quality chances and outshooting Brown, 12-4.

Providence's lone score came at 14:31 of the third period. Junior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) fed Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) in front. As she was falling, Gauthier flipped the puck up and over the goaltender for her third of the season.
