Hamden, Conn. - A goal by freshman defender Emily Pfalzer at 17:51 in the third period nearly pushed the fourth-ranked Boston College women's ice hockey team past Quinnipiac, but the Bobcats (7-7-1, 5-2-1 ECACH) answered with 10 seconds left in regulation and went on to win in overtime, 2-1, on Tuesday night at High Point Solutions Arena.
Boston College controlled play from the onset, bombarding Quinnipiac goaltender Chelsea Laden with 14 shots in the first period. Laden stopped 33 shots to pick up her first win on the year. Junior goalkeeper Corinne Boyles made 16 saves as the Eagles fell to 8-4-1, 5-2-1 Hockey East.
Following a quiet second period, the Eagles stepped up the pressure again in the third, putting 14 shots on goal.
With nearly two minutes left to play, freshmen forwards Emily Field and Alex Carpenter connected with their classmate on the go ahead goal, 1-0. The point extended the trio's point streak to four games and moved Pfalzer's defensive league leading tally to nine points.
BC was called for high-sticking nine seconds later, the fourth Eagles penalty of the period, and charged with closing out regulation down one skater.
At 19:28, Quinnipiac pulled Laden for the 6-on-4 advantage. Following a timeout with 16 seconds to play, the Bobcats won a faceoff that resulted in a fast break for Kelly Babstock and Nicole Kosta. Babstock, Quinnipiac's all-time leading scorer, finished over Boyles' right shoulder for the equalizer at 19:50 and ultimately forced overtime.
The Eagles won the opening puck drop in the extra period, moved the puck up ice and took a shot that was denied. Boyles responded with a save when the Bobcats did the same, but was hit for three quick deliveries on the resulting faceoff. Amanda Colin put the third in the net for the game-winner at 35 seconds in to the extra frame. Breann Frykas and Melissa Perry had the first chances on goal and were credited with assists.
BC will resume competition with a home skate against Princeton on Friday, Nov. 25 at 3 p.m. A live-stream will be available through bceagles.com and stats will be provided courtesy of GameTracker.
