Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The fourth-ranked Boston College women's ice hockey team was toppled by Providence, 6-2, at home on Saturday afternoon at Kelley Rink. Senior Mary Restuccia and sophomore Taylor Wasylk netted goals for the Eagles (18-8-3, 11-4-2 Hockey East) in the loss.
Senior center Ashley Cottrell registered four points, serving up two third period goals to complete a hat trick, and senior goaltender Genevieve LaCasse stopped 37 shots to lift the Friars (12-15-3, 9-7-1 Hockey East) to a road win.
The Eagles fell behind, 1-0, when the Friars capitalized on a power play following a checking call near the 12th minute. Despite Boston College dominating play for most of the first period with a 17-5 shots advantage, it was PC center Jessica Vella who scored off of passes from Abby Gauthier and Jessica Cohen.
Both sides came out with physical play in the second, but Cottrell notched her first goal of the day at 3:04 to put BC down by two, 2-0. The skate advance almost five and a half minutes before sophomore center Rebecca Morse would put the Eagles deeper in the hole, 3-0.
Boston College responded with two goals before the close of the second period. Senior defenseman Jessica Martino took a pass from junior Ashley Motherwell at the blue line and hit Restuccia in stride as she skated through the left circle for a quick strike to get the Eagles on the board, 3-1, at 13:14.
Within the next minute, BC would be the benefactor of a holding call and used it to close the gap, 3-2. At 14:42, freshman Emily Field connected with senior Danielle Welch in the slot, who found Wasylk on the far post for the goal.
Coming out of the intermission, the Eagles look to duplicate a third period comeback from a few weeks prior. However, Cottrell put the game out of reach with a goal in the upper-L at 4:58 and added another at 13:59 to advance the tally to 5-2.
The final goal of the day came from junior left-winger Nicole Anderson at 18:43.
Boston College junior goalkeeper Corinne Boyles made 23 saves and is just 27 stops shy of becoming the fifth Eagle to ever record 1,400 saves in a career.
BC will close out the 34th Annual Beanpot Tournament against No. 8 Harvard on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
