PROVIDENCE COLLEGE DEFEATS ROBERT MORRIS, 5-2, TO SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES
Freshman Corinne Buie scores two goals for Friars

Jennifer Friedman picked up a pair of assists for the Friars

NEVILLE ISLAND, PA. - The Providence College Hockey team received two goals from freshman Corinne, Buie (Edina, Minn.) and defeated host Robert Morris, 5-2, earning its first victory of the young season.

The story was the Friars' offense, who avenged a 5-4 loss to RMU on Friday night by outshooting the Colonials 49 to 22.

Despite outshooting the Colonials 19-5 after the first period, the Friars found themselves playing catch-up midway through the second. RMU's Corbina Delaney batted a puck out of mid air into the back of the Friar net at 12:50 of the middle period, giving the hosts a 1-0 cushion.

The deficit did not last. Just 1:23 later, sophomore Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) swept home her own rebound to knot the game, 1-1. Just :53 after that, at the 15:06 mark of the middle period, Jessica Cohen (Anchorage, Alaska) knocked the puck in from the doorstep to give the Friars a 2-1 edge. Then, with :46 left in the second, junior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) sent a hard wrist shot on net that was turned away by Colonial goalie Daneca Butterfield. The rebound, however, went right to fellow junior Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) who re-deposited into the back of the night, making it 3-1 Friars.

Buie provided the insurance in the third. At the 10:30 mark, junior Jen Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.) blasted a slapshot from the blue line. It was slowed by a Colonial stick, but the puck hung dangerously in front of the crease until Buie put it away for the 4-1 edge.

Robert Morris closed to within 4-2. But with :22 left and the RMU net empty, Buie brought the puck into the attack zone and was knocked to her knees by diving Colonial captain Whitney Pappas. Buie maintained possession, guided the puck into the yawning twine, and sealed the 5-2 victory.

Friar Goalie Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) earned the decision in net, stopping 20 shots. Lacasse also earned the lone assist on the final Buie goal.

The Friars will play again next weekend, hosting the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday (10/9) and then the Clarkson Golden Knights on Sunday (10/10). Both face-offs are at 2 p.m. For ticket information, contact the Friars ticket office at (401) 865-GOPC.
