ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team picked up a split this weekend with Quinnipiac as Maine downed the Bobcats Saturday by a score of 4-2. The win evens up Maine's record at 3-3-0 as they handed the 5-1-0 Bobcats their first loss of the season. Jennie Gallo (Castlegar, British Columbia) scored her sixth goal of the season and added an assist to lead Maine.

Maine would get the scoring started 7:00 into the first period when Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.) scored her third goal of the season. Jordan Colliton (Blackie, Alberta) forced a turnover along the boards in the Quinnipiac zone, poke checking the puck to Ward. Ward then skated into the slot and unleashed a wrist shot that beat Bobcat goaltender Victoria Vigilanti.

The Black Bears would take a 2-0 lead in the closing seconds of the first period. Skating with a man advantage, the Black Bears moved the puck around the Quinnipiac zone as Gallo sent a pass to Ashley Norum (Fairbanks, Alaska). Norum found Myriam Croussette (Baie-Comeau, Quebec) in the right circle who was able to sneek a shot by Vigilanti.

The Black Bears would extend their lead to 3-0 1:26 into the second period. Kristi King (Lake Elmo, Minn.) skated the puck in and threw a shot towards the Bobcat net. The puck snuck through Vigilanti and after a battle in the crease, Gallo was able to tap the puck across the goal line for the score.

Quinnipiac would score the game's next two goals to pull them within one goal of the Black Bears. Brittany Lyons picked up the first Quinnipiac power play goal after she received a feed from Lindsay Burman. Kelly Babstock also assisted on the goal for Quinnipiac.

The Bobcats would pick up their second power play goal of the contest 13:24 into the second period when Bethany Dymarczyk received a pass from Regan Boulton. Dymarczyk rocketed a shot from the blue line that snuck through a crowd in front of Maine goaltender Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) and found the back of the net.

The Black Bears would regain a two goal advantage 16:55 into the second period when Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) notched her fifth goal of the season. Kayla Kaluzny (Calgary, Alberta) controlled the puck at the blue line as Maine skated on the power play. Kaluzny sent a shot towards the net that was blocked. She controlled her own rebound and hit Dougherty with a pass. Dougherty skated into the slot and flicked a wrist shot into the back of the Bobcat net. Norum also assisted on the play for Maine.

The Black Bears would shut down Quinnipiac in the third period, as Ott made 11 third period saves, to secure the win, 4-2, for Maine.

Maine returns to action with their first road game of the season on Oct. 22 when they travel to take on Niagara. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
